It was the hope of capturing our amazing Arizona sunsets which first drew me to the medium of soft pastels - “reactivating” an art degree used during the years of raising kids in diverse/creative ways, ranging from youth art instructor to prop designer for youth theater.

Whether whimsical saguaros, glowing “golden hour” desert mountains, or the reflections and shifting colors of water, my paintings are inspired by the beauty found in God’s creation. There is a great tactile pleasure in holding a chunk of pure pigment and laying down vibrant, expressive color to capture the play of light and shadow, the movement of water, the facets of stone, or a cluster of wildflowers.

The only problem: there are just so many things begging to be painted! Landscapes, waterscapes, still lifes....all can be found as you browse this site. No portraits yet, but some day. Over the past few years, I’ve been blessed with opportunities to grow as an artist through the generous instruction of some well-known and incredibly talented pastelists. Support of my work has come from the galleries where my paintings are displayed, acceptance and awards from juried exhibitions, and, of course, my wonderful collectors.

My heartfelt desire is to share the beauty and joy I find in God’s creation with others. In doing so, I feel I’m embracing a family artistic heritage. My grandfather was both a professional artist and served in WWI and WWII. He was a “Monuments Man” and oversaw the first collection center tasked with identifying and returning art work stolen by the Nazis. I hope he would be proud.

The purpose of art is to help to see , to feel, and to appreciate the world in which we live. It is concerned, not with prosaic facts, but with the poetic joy of discovering beauty wherever it may be found. In the landscape, the sea, the sky, the human soul and many other sources, art discovers and pictures for those of us who would otherwise be inarticulate, the love of God, incarnate in Christ Jesus.”

As a watercolorist, I long to embrace all the wonderful things this medium has to offer, blossoms, drips, unexpected things that happen - lost edges, movement of pigment. I want to keep them all to remember that it is very much like life itself. Most artists feel that this medium is difficult to control and the most challenging to paint with. But I feel the total opposite of this. I long for all of the uniqueness and beauty watercolors have to offer and to leave room for the viewer to fill in what may be missing or nearly suggested.

As a teacher I love to share this passion of watercolor techniques, theories and joy with all of my students. It is my hope that they find enjoyment in interpreting their world with paint, splatters, drips and color by embracing the unexpected and unplanned.

Most of my paintings are available as framed originals - those that have sold or not for sale are available as a high quality reproduction prints. In addition, I am available for work for hire and commissioned pieces - your loved child or blessed grandchild, or pet.

I had taught my FEARLESS WATERCOLORS at the Art League of Long Island and The Artists Studio at Chelsea Mansion until March 2020 when I taught exclusively on line and reached students from all of the US and internationally. I still run on-line classes every Tuesday.

Every year I do a 4-day workshop at the Landgrove Inn in Vermont which will be in October 2025 and a week long workshop in July 2025 I’ll be at the Omega Center in Rhinebeck, NY.

I SO enjoy teaching my watercolor techniques, theories and joy with all of my students. It is my hope that they find enjoyment in interpreting their world with paint, splatters, drips and color by embracing the unexpected and unplanned.

I am at The Firefly Artists Gallery in Northport, NY where I exhibit and sell my paintings. I have exhibited at the Heckscher Museum, the William Reis Gallery, the Huntington Arts Council, the Long Island Museum, the Art League of Long Island, The Art Guild and am a permanent artist at The Firelyfly Gallery in Northport, NY.

I am a graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology and have been a graphic artist designing marketing materials for businesses for 45 years. I recently retired from graphic design to focus entirely on my painting and teaching career. Interesting for me to notice that there are many skills that I learned at FIT and in business that I utilize in my teaching.

Artist’s Statement

As a toddler, I already was carefully observing the world around me and drawing constantly, whether on paper or bedroom walls. Fortunately, my arts-loving parents were forgiving and encouraging. Throughout school years and into adulthood I explored many 2D and 3D mediums, but pen-and-inks and oils -- later replaced by acrylics -- resonated with me. They still do.

Rather than strict adherence to a signature style or subject matter, my creative impulse determines interpretation and medium.

With brush strokes resembling the lush texture of oils, my acrylic paintings are expressive representations. Observers describe them as realistic with a touch of Impressionism, but I think that each work speaks for itself. My goal is to embrace viewers’ feelings visually, and to start a conversation or a story that can be fueled by their imagination.

Pen and ink? Now, that’s a whole other story. Different medium, different approach; a way to celebrate my abiding love for the power and beauty of line. Within the realm usually of black on white, ideas and imagery emerge from lines liberated and flowing unfettered to interpret emotion, movement, and the ephemeral.

Occasionally the spirit moves me to blend the two, pen-and-ink and acrylic, into unique visual ideas compounded by the drama of color onto paper, paint board or canvas. How much more fun can that be!

In the studio I am in a cocoon of calm when touching paint to canvas or ink to paper, and hours float by on gossamer wings. My signature may mark a piece as finished, but it is the doing -- resolving creative challenges along the way -- that is most rewarding and which completes my personal journey. The hope, then, is that the viewer’s journey with it has only just begun.

Biography

As an award winning artist and signature member of MTWS, Cynthia creates paintings that speak both to her and to others about the beauty in the world around us. She lures the viewer into her watercolors to become involved in the scene and to connect to the painting’s place and time.

She loves watercolor because it provides unique challenges while presenting opportunities to explore how colors work. It is not a medium to be totally controlled and manipulated; that is precisely what draws Cynthia hypnotically to the process, even utterly to the point of addictive. The unique spontaneity of the medium fascinates her.

After growing up in Conroe, Texas, and receiving her BFA from Sam Houston State University in 1987, she found her way to Montana. The regional scenery speaks to her and inspires her work. She currently lives in Columbia Falls, Montana, the gateway to Glacier National Park.

Without any prior art instruction, she started taking watercolor classes in 2017 at the local community college. She fell in love with the flow of the medium and has been hooked ever since. She has studied extensively with Karen Leigh in Kalispell, Montana, and other influential watercolorists: Ted Nuttall, Keiko Tanabe, Soon Y Warren, Eric Weigardt and Iain Stewart. She has joined in countless classes and tutorials to learn different ways to experiment with the medium. She knows her exploration into watercolor will provide a life-long learning journey.

Biography

Mary Gehley is a mixed media painter and gourd artist whose art combines abstract forms with figurative or representational subjects. Her background in quilting and textile art contributes to the sensitivity of color, composition and texture in her current work. Her sense of curiosity and love of experimentation combine with a patient attention to detail, allowing her to create work playfully splashed with multiple layers of paint, papers, crayon and markers combined with areas of fine precision. Mary’s work is at times whimsical and lighthearted, at times contemplative and soulful. She is inspired by the beauty of her gardens, the mysteries of hidden layers and connections, and the excitement of exploration and discovery.

“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once they grow up”.

I’ve come full circle.

I remember in elementary school we had dedicated art time. The teacher played music and we would quietly draw or color. A welcome respite for the teacher, it was also a favorite time for me. I still love the smell of crayons. checked my seams and if they weren’t straight, I had to pick out those stitches and do it over. She taught me to create with precision and detail. . . Later, high school and college art courses were a break from academics - life drawing, ceramics, design, but by this time, I was in “compare and despair” mode. . . I believed others’ work was always better than mine. I believed I would never be good enough at this art thing, so I put away my pencils and crayons.

As young wife and mother, I discovered quilting. The sewing machine was my old friend - an opportunity for creativity and reconnection with memories of Grandma Eva. Creating bed quilts, art quilts, quilting by hand or machine, I felt connected to history and stories, particularly women’s stories. I fell in love with fabrics, color play, and shape relationships. In 2004, I discovered gourd art making. Like quilting, gourding has strong connections to history and the human story. I learned to clean, cut, woodburn, carve and color gourds. My daughter joined me in creating the Corona Gourd Company. I shared my gourd fascination with others through art fairs, workshops and videos. I connected with a local art group to share my gourd love. Seeing the paintings and drawings in the gallery sparked my desire to draw again, and to learn to paint on canvas. Classes, workshops, demos fed my eagerness to learn, but I was still searching for my own artistic voice.

In 2019, serendipity led me to Louise Fletcher’s Find Your Joy course, followed by Nicholas Wilton’s Creative Visionary Program. It was like I was back in my childhood, listening to music, playing with paint and crayons and paper without worrying about a finished work of art. Freed from the worry of an “acceptable” result, I had fun slinging paint, experimenting with wild marks, drips and scratches, collaging bits of paper, and printing with kitchen tools. Tapping into what I loved about color, form, texture and shapes I learned to paint from my heart instead of trying to paint like others. I’m now free to be here today, crayon in hand, sharing my art story. . .because that’s what we artists do.

Lou Goodwin is a full time contemporary artist working in acrylic and mixed media. She brings an abstracted and whimsical approach to her subject matter. She came to painting later in live but has always been interested and committed to art and craft in many forms. Her working career was spent as a Registered Nurse in the small NW Ontario town where she grew up. Painting found her after she retired while living aboard a boat. Lou has taken many courses and has shown her work at various art shows in different locations in Canada and the US.

Lou is a member and a director of the Lake of the Woods Arts Community, takes parts in many online and offline art courses, and attempts to paint daily.

Biography

Jerry Salinas graduated from the American Academy of Art in Chicago with a degree in Illustration and Fine Arts where he studied with Bill Parks. He has been working as an illustrator since the mid-1990’s for many ad agencies.

He is now a full time artist working in the studio with a big smile on his face . Jerry is a member of the Palette and Chisel Academy of Fine Arts, where he has studied with Romel de la Torre, Clayton J. Beck III and various visiting painters.

Jerry Lives in Phoenix, Arizona pursuing his passion for oil paintings. Going from painting a few hours a week to several hours everyday is pushing his work to a new level. He is excited to be painting western subjects in a contemporary realist style. Jerry also teaches local classes at the prestigious Scottsdale Artists’ School. Biography

Rita Pacheco works daily in plein air and in her Ridgway, Colorado studio. A recent transplant from Southern California, she is finally enjoying four seasons, and the different, ever changing scenery of Southwestern Colorado! Rita was selected as a Signature Member of the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association and is an Artist Member and Out of State Chapter Chair of the California Art Club. Her work is shown at the Cimarron Song Gallery in Montrose, Colorado, and at Lovetts Gallery in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Rita’s landscape, portrait and still life paintings grace homes and businesses throughout the country, and internationally! One of Rita’s recent works was awarded Figurative Honorable Mention at the Oil Painters of America’s National Exhibition in Charleston, South Carolina. She has been featured in Southwest Artists and Plein Air Magazine, and was named an “Artist to Watch” in Southwest Art Magazine!

Rita began her formal training Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. She continued her education with classes at the Watts Atelier in Encinitas and through experience with and influence of other prominent figurative and landscape painters. She has since developed a style of her own and enjoys recognition in her field.

Rita’s work background is in architectural rendering through 15 years in restaurant and hotel design. This is where the hard lessons of perspective were learned, and facilitate drawing accuracy in her paintings. The sheer enjoyment she feels when painting from life are evident in the strength of her dynamic landscape, figurative and still life paintings!

Biography

As a representational painter, I’m attracted to the variety of formal possibilities in a motif; characteristics like the shapes of shadows or the colors of forms. I respond with playfulness, then objectivity, then moments of raw emotion, which often look like rescuing the effort with a unified simplification, or messing it up to give myself more problems to solve.

My hopes going forward are to integrate an ever-developing love of art history, and a deeper reliance on my imagination. It’s wonderful to spend a portion of my time giving back, and I hope to continue inspiring through writing and teaching; and more importantly, through a life dedicated to artistry.

Born and raised in Houston, John Lasater is an acclaimed artist currently residing in the picturesque hills of Northwest Arkansas. Initially recognized for his impressionistic style and bold brushwork, Lasater has undergone transformation through extensive travels and deep historical and experimental self-studies. This evolution has led his recent works to have a more contemplative and simplified approach.

A prolific figure in the plein air scene for many years, Lasater is widely regarded as one of the premier outdoor painters in America, evidenced by his invitation to join the prestigious Plein Air Painters of America. His numerous accolades include close to 50 top awards at events such as Door County Plein Air, Sedona Plein Air, Maui Plein Air Invitational, Plein Air Southwest Salon, and the Grand Canyon Celebration of Art. While outdoor painting remains integral to his artistic process, Lasater continues to push the boundaries of his craft with unwavering dedication and passion.

What attracts a person to a scene? Its light? Its composition? Its character? Or is it something more, something hidden?

Painting, for me, goes beyond a process of representing visual perceptions on a canvas. It is a way of communicating my response to the perceptual moment, not simply of seen shapes and colors, but to what exists to make that scene stand above all others. My paintings strive to reveal what is unseen, to move the emotions of the viewer and suggest ideas, awaken emotions and discover truths both uplifting and noble.

To paint is to communicate my emotions to others. To have my art touch the core of my work’s viewers means I have conveyed an emotion suggesting the human condition, and in doing so have succeeded as an artist.

Biography

I was born to an artistic Massachusetts family. I started drawing and painting very early. My home was filled with beautiful paintings done by my great grandmother. She traveled to the White Mountains in New Hampshire in the 1890”s to paint”en plein air”. I was inspired by these paintings and encouraged by my family. I always knew I wanted to be an artist.

I recieved a National Scholastic Art Scholarship in high school to go to the art school of my choice.I dreamed of becoming an illustrator and choose Vesper George School of Art in Boston.

One of my teachers was Robert Douglas Hunter. He noticed my talent and encouraged me to move from commercial art to fine art. I transferred to the School of the Museum of Fine Art in Boston, Massachusetts and majored in painting.

In my early twenties I had an urge to travel and headed west. I was struck by the awesome beauty of the Rocky Mountains.I settled in the historic mining town of Ward, Colorado, surronded by National Forest and near the Indian Peaks Wilderness area .Hiking, backpacking, and living in a small town suited me . I am still here today.

After many years of working with pastels, I felt like holding a brush again.I decided to get serious about oils and signed up for workshops with the best teachers and painters I could find. I studied with Kim English, Skip Whitcomb, Kang Cho,Greg Kreutz, George Strickland, Carolyn Anderson and Kevin Weckbach.I can’t begin to describe how great it is to spend time with teachers so willing to share their knowledge and experience.

I enjoy painting just about anything - landscapes, interiors, buildings and figures, but my greatest love is plein air painting. The weather ,the light, and the land all become part of me.Heading out into nature,looking around and being inspired by a beautiful composition and translating that to my canvas right then and there is always exciting to me.

I still love to travel to New England, Florida and the mountains and deserts of the Southwest. You can often find me happily painting on the side of a road, in some grubby alleyway, or off on some trail past the “no trespassing” sign.

I’ve always known I wanted to be an artist, though for much of my life I didn’t realize it was something people still did for a living. Growing up in the north woods of Wisconsin, I was surrounded by forests, lakes, and wildlife. Nature was the backdrop to my childhood, and it’s been my greatest source of inspiration ever since.

After getting a degree in graphic design, I made a spontaneous move to Laguna Beach, California. There, I discovered a vibrant community of working artists and realized that painting wasn’t just nostalgia of a bygone era, it was very much alive and I wanted to be a part of it.

I picked up a paintbrush and began practicing and fell in love with Plein Air. For me, painting has always been about being present in the landscape: feeling the air, watching the light shift, and capturing the mood of the moment as it flows into the next.

Today, I am located in Colorado where I continue to seek out the quiet beauty of nature, letting each place I visit tell its own story through my work. Every brushstroke is a reflection of a time and place I experienced in the landscapes that have shaped me since childhood.

Gunnar currently lives in Northern Colorado.

Georgii Rachinsky is a self-taught painter currently based in Novi Sad, Serbia. Before turning to visual art, he pursued an academic career in philosophy and religious studies, earning a PhD while researching ideology, religion, and political thought. It was during the final years of his doctoral work that painting unexpectedly entered his life. What began as simple digital collages made to escape the monotony of academic writing gradually evolved into an obsession with light, shadow, and atmospheric figurative painting.

His work occupies the territory between magical realism, contemporary surrealism, and dark figurative art. It explores liminal psychological states - moments suspended between life and death, beauty and decay, desire and loss. Perfection, fundamentally unachievable in mortal life, appears on the canvas as a moment arrested in time. Yet it is always accompanied by ‘memento mori’ imagery, which underscores its connection to transcendence.

That is also the reason why he is more focused on painting than on composing music, to which - unlike visual art - he has been dedicated since childhood. Following Schopenhauer, he understands music as the most direct expression of the Blind Will: an endless movement of longing, desire, and absence. Painting, by contrast, suspends that movement. It allows the unattainable to appear as complete and becomes an act of anamnesis - in the Platonic and even Gnostic sense. In such a way, painting has become his philosophical answer to what music could not resolve.

Beyond that, he is interested in the philosophical consequences of the decline of postmodernism and the emergence of metamodern thought. His current research explores the possibility of restoring beauty as a fundamental component of artistic meaning rather than treating aesthetics as merely decorative or secondary to concept.

Alongside his artistic practice, he is an entrepreneur and the founder of an IT recruitment company. This parallel career allows him to remain financially independent and to approach painting without the pressure to adapt his work to market expectations.

Biography

Kitty Schroeder is an artist based in Cincinnati, Ohio, who is currently creating layered, map-based images using mixed mediums. These works convey a sense of energy and time, centering on the relationship of mapping with global connectivity. Childhood experiences moving repeatedly continue to inspire her layered methods of making artwork.

She earned a BA and MA from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, focusing on ceramics, printmaking and drawing. In Arkansas she worked as an Artist in the Schools and as a founding member of ArtSpace Artist Cooperative. She worked eight years in the Junkin after filling two adjunct positions, art making was subjected to realism and support for her family. Her focus since retiring remains on skills and experimentation. In 2024, she completed a year-long residency at Manifest Gallery.

I have been passionate about drawing and painting since early childhood and I’ve never met a medium I didn’t like. My work ranges from oil painting “en plein air” to all genres of studio work, LIVE music and event paintings and all forms of sculpture. I am honored to be recognized with over 209 awards for painting in oils, acrylic, watercolors, gouache, drawing, colored pencil, mixed media, pen & ink, photography and sculpture - for portraits, still life, landscapes and abstraction.

Among these are international recognition as one the premier artists painting in major Plein air Competition Events. I enjoy the camaraderie, competition and creativity of Plein Air events as they inspire me to continually expand as an artist. I’ve had over 63 solo shows and a multitude of juried art shows. My work is in museum and private collections across the USA and in England, Ireland, Russia, Germany, Netherlands, Estonia, China and Curacao.

I Live paint for galas, live music and events as they take place. A Live Art Fusionist, my acrylic works continue to wow audiences & garner great press. I was recently flown to LA by a famous actress to paint her daughter’s wedding LIVE. It was a great success.

As an avid sailor, classic, modern and one design yacht racing has fueled my inspiration of fascinating nautical and maritime artworks. My art was featured in the Mystic Seaport museum of America and the Sea exhibition “”Modern Masterpiece - 30 Years of the Museum Purchase Award”, and I have been selected for exhibit in the Mystic Seaport Gallery’s 31st, 32nd, 33rd, 34th, 36th and 37th annual “International Maritime art shows” (respectively), Quinlan Arts center museum show “Southern Waters” and my painting “Skimmer vs. IVRE” was included in a 22 month, 8 museum, national tour as part of the American Society of Marine Artists “Contemporary American Marine Art” show.

I’ve developed a teaching method that accelerates the learning curve in art; a former Professor at the Parsons New School University School of Design Strategies & associate of The School of Fashion Design, a film and television actor SAG-AFTRA; mentor & motivational speaker; I am a musician, a gourmet cook and an award winning published writer of short stories, screenplays, essays and poetry much of it about sailing and the sea. In 2025 (and 2015) nominated for Poet laureate of Nassau County.

Yael Maimon was born in Israel on January 22, 1980. Drawing and painting since forever, Maimon decided to be fully committed to her art in her early twenties. In 2003 she graduated from Bar Ilan University with a first degree B.A. in Psychology. Her art education includes studying with the oil painter Amnon David Ar in 2005-6 in Israel, attending Margaret Dyer‘s pastel workshop in France, Eugen Chisnicean‘s watercolor workshop in France and Daniel Keys‘ online course.

Maimon is best known for her Cats painting series. She volunteered at an animal rescue center and today at her home still taking care and saving abandoned kittens. “Cats are now my first circle of close friends. I love them and they give me daily inspiration. Cats are very intelligent creatures, they are simply fascinating animals” . For her, it’s both fun and a challenge trying to capture their facial expressions, gestures and body language on canvas or paper.

Maimon enjoys painting in a variety of media including oil, pastel, acrylic, watercolor and mixed media. In addition to her Cats series, Maimon works on a magical figurative series called Once Upon a Time and a still-life Pastry series. She likes “playing” with the colors and constantly experimenting. In her work process there’s always room for improvisation and spontaneity.

Although grounded in realism, Maimon’s paintings are often impressionist in nature. Her artwork was featured in collective art exhibitions in Israel, gained international recognition and has been bought by private collectors.

I am an Italian selftaught multidisciplinary artist working across painting, sculpture, tattooing, animation, jewelry, and writing. My artistic practice is primarily centered on creating hyper-realistic surrealist works that combine realistic portraiture with symbolism, abstraction, and emotional intensity. I mainly work with acrylics while traveling and oils when in a studio setting, adapting my techniques and materials to the environment around me. My earlier work was deeply influenced by metaphysical and esoteric studies, including sacred geometry, alchemy, duality, universal consciousness, and spiritual symbolism. I explored themes connected tohidden dimensions of reality and the relationship between the spiritual and material worlds. Through layered symbolism and carefully constructed compositions, I aimed to create works that invited reflection beyond the visible surface. Over the years, my artistic language evolved toward a more instinctive and emotionally driven approach. Influenced by Latin American culture, indigenous traditions, and the energy of painting in public spaces, I began focusing less on rigid symbolism and more on spontaneity, emotional flow, and the expressive power of color. I often create my own handmade canvases and custom pastel blends from primary colors, treating color itself as a symbolic and emotional language within the artwork. Alongside painting, I create hyper-realistic silicone sculptures, illustratedbooks, and tattoo designs that extend my visual identity across different mediums. My work seeks to merge technical precision with intuitive expression, creating immersive visual experiences that connect symbolism, emotion, and contemporary surrealism into a singular artistic vision.

Biography

Ashwini Bharathula (b.1984) is a representational fine artist specializing in oil painting, currently based in Chandler, AZ. “Growing up in India, I LOVED to draw in my spare time. My artistic journey began with sketching Disney characters and figures from Indian mythology.” Ashwini pursued a formal education in the field of Materials Science and Engineering. After completing her Bachelor’s degree at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, she moved to the US in 2005 to pursue her Master’s and PhD at The Ohio State University. A summer painting class during graduate school reignited her love for creating. After getting her PhD, she worked in the semiconductor industry for a few years. “Even while working in the corporate world, I had this constant itch to paint.” With a deep appreciation for both the analytical and the creative, Ashwini eventually left the corporate world to explore the intersection of science and art. She first launched a YouTube channel featuring educational science videos and later collaborated with TED-Ed to create animated short films. During this period, she also deepened her commitment to painting, ultimately making the leap to pursue fine art full-time. “The act of creating something realistic and beautiful from scratch brings me immense joy,” she says.

Her artistic education includes workshops at the Scottsdale Artists’ School and extensive study of foundational texts like Richard Schmid’s Alla Prima. She has studied with renowned artists such as Susan Lyon, Daniel Keys, Suchitra Bhosle, Louis Carr, Todd Casey, Ned Mueller, Adrien Gottlieb, Kathleen Speranza, and Gustavo Ramos. Today, Ashwini is also an instructor at the Scottsdale Artists’ School, sharing her passion and expertise with fellow artists.

“My painting style can be described as Representational Realism. I primarily work alla prima in oils and prefer to paint directly from life. My subjects span flowers, portraits, and landscapes-each offering me a unique opportunity to explore color, texture, and composition in depth. I find endless inspiration in floral themes; their variety and vitality never fail to exhilarate. In portraiture, I aim to go beyond mere likeness, capturing the spirit and personality of the human in front of me. I also enjoy painting landscapes and scenes inspired by my travels. Whether it’s the beauty of a rose, a mountain vista, or an expressive face, these moments spark joy in my heart and inspire me to bring them to life on canvas. Painting places me in a deeply immersive state when I stop thinking and simply create!”
