Biography

Laurie Kersey’s life as an artist began as a child in rural Ohio. She grew up in an artistic household and always loved to draw and paint. Her mother enjoyed painting in oils when Laurie was young and then later switched to watercolors. Her father was a horseman, training and racing harness horses, and she spent her summers helping out in the barn at the track.

After an early art education at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and then a 15 year career in commercial art as an Art Director and Illustrator on the East Coast, Kersey relocated to San Francisco, studied painting at the Academy of Art University, and made the switch to fine art. She later taught painting and drawing in the Fine Art Department at the Academy.

Though excited about painting myriad aspects of the natural world, including landscape and floral, a dominant theme in her work is horses. Having ridden for many years, she has come to realize that her hands-on experience with horses uniquely influences the way that she sees and paints them.

“My equine paintings focus on the relationships - between horses, or between horse and human. That’s the part I know well. As beautiful as the outside of a horse is, it’s the inside that interests me the most. One of my favorite things about riding is meeting and getting to know so many different horses; different characters and personalities, different quirks, likes, and dislikes. I love discovering those things as a rider, and I love trying to express them in a painting.”

Honors include awards in the Oil Painters of America National Juried Exhibition, the American Women Artists National Juried Exhibition, the California Art Club Biennial Exhibition, the Plein Air Salon Online Competition, and several plein air events. She has been featured in Art of the West Magazine, Southwest Art Magazine, Plein Air Magazine, Fine Art Connoisseur Magazine, American Artist Magazine, USEF’s Equestrian Magazine, and Horses in Art Magazine.

Kersey is a Signature Member of the California Art Club, Oil Painters of America, and American Impressionist Society, and a Master Signature Member of American Women Artists. She is represented by Carmel Fine Art in Carmel, CA, Portico Fine Art in Montecito, CA, and Wild Horse Gallery in Steamboat Springs, CO.

She resides in Pebble Beach, CA with her artist husband, Brian Blood.

My name is Kadee McGill, a wildlife and outdoor sporting artist based in South Carolina. I’ve been drawing for as long as I can remember, and what began with a pencil in childhood has grown into a lifelong passion for creating artwork that celebrates the natural world.

Animals have always been my greatest inspiration. Whether it’s the quiet focus of a hunting dog, the strength of a whitetail buck, or the watchful eyes of a bird in the marsh, I’m drawn to the moments that reveal both the power and the grace of wildlife. My goal isn’t simply to paint what an animal looks like-it’s to capture what it feels like to encounter it.

Much of my work is inspired by my own experiences outdoors. Hunting, fishing, and spending time in nature have taught me to appreciate the stillness that often goes unnoticed. Those moments have become the foundation of my new and ongoing collection, The Quiet Places, a series dedicated to preserving the peaceful memories found in the outdoors before they fade.

Creating commissioned artwork has also become one of the most meaningful parts of my career. Whether I’m painting a beloved hunting companion, a cherished family pet, or a portrait that honors someone special, I understand that these pieces carry stories far beyond the canvas. Knowing my artwork can preserve those memories for generations is both a privilege and a responsibility that I never take lightly.

In addition to my fine art, I’ve had the opportunity to create Timbergill Outdoors, a brand that features my artwork on apparel and outdoor-inspired products for people who share a love of hunting, fishing, and life outside.

Above all, I hope my paintings remind people to slow down and appreciate the beauty that’s always been there-the quiet mornings, loyal dogs, wild places, and unforgettable moments that shape our lives.

Art is more than what we see. It’s the memories we choose to keep.

Biography

I am an artist painting primarily with pastels. I am drawn to paint places that resonate for me in some way - something catches my eye, such as the light or shadows, or a sense of energy or stillness. During the process of sketching and painting, I discover more deeply what I see and feel, which becomes part of the painting.

In my other work as a nurse-midwife, I have been with people during physically and emotionally intense times, both joyful and difficult. This has given me an understanding of deeply felt emotions. I want my paintings to reflect the deeply felt experiences and moments when we are fully present in our surroundings and in ourselves.

Artist’s Statement

I am a passionate painter who believes that time spent painting is precious. My goal is to draw and paint every day and I believe that the fastest way to artistic growth is through the activity of painting. I enjoy painting outside to take advantage of surroundings, natural light, and the sights and sounds that influence each painter’s creative nature. Outside in nature’s studio is where I find the greatest challenge and the greatest reward. I am challenged to capture the moment because light and its effect, reflection and cast shadow changes continuously. I am forced to simplify, to reduce the overwhelming complexity of what’s in front of me into only the most important shapes and values. My nature is to be spontaneous so working loose and impressionistically appeals to me. The magic of watercolor is found in the partnership between artist and medium, of finding a balance between the knowledge, technique and skill of the painter while leaving room for the magic that makes watercolor so distinctive.

FASO Collector Recommends: Valerie McMullen

Biography

Born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona, Valerie McMullen was highly influenced by art and creativity at a very early age. Her father was an exceptionally talented watercolorist whose detailed paintings of tropical birds and flowers provided an early inspiration. In high school, her art teacher encouraged her to develop her drawing and painting abilities and upon graduation she continued her education in art. In 1991 she graduated from Arizona State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Studio Art. A future career path as a flight attendant for American Airlines enabled her to travel to many cities both foreign and domestic. She was able to view firsthand the artworks of many of the great masters she had studied while in college. Valerie once again picked up the brush and began to create art. After taking many classes and painting traditional watercolors it was a workshop with noted Pennsylvania artist Nessa Grainger that led her to a new outlook. In this workshop Valerie was exposed to mixed media and collage which she employs in her works today. Since relocating back to the Southwest, she continues to pursue her artistic training by attending such local schools as the Scottsdale Artists’ School and workshops with many talented instructors such as Stan Kurth and Timothy Rees. Valerie McMullen is a Signature Member of the Arizona Watercolor Association and a Juried Member of the Arizona Art Alliance.

Biography

Mark has developed an international reputation and has won numerous awards, both in his native Canada and in the United States. A dedicated painter, Mark Lague was born in Lachine Quebec in 1964 and he has had a fascination with drawing since childhood, a skill he practices constantly, even to this day. Upon graduation from Montreal’s Concordia University in Design, Mark embarked on a 13-year career in the animation industry, working primarily as a background designer and art director. During this time, despite working full time, he began receiving international acclaim for his watercolour paintings through competitions, juried shows, and solo exhibitions. In 2000, Mark switched to oil as his primary medium, and in 2002 made the jump to full time painter. As an artist he is a realist, who is open to virtually all subject matter. What keeps him excited about painting is his endless quest to simplify and get to the essence of whatever he paints. Mark has been featured in numerous national art magazines, and continues to receive international recognition for his distinctive style of painting.

Life is full with family, friends like you, and an art career that keeps me smock-donned and constantly on my toes. Each year, I take personal painting trips -- with at least one to Europe - France (Paris - 2025 and the South of France - June 2026), Italy (the hill towns of Umbria in 2025), Spain (residency in 2027) and others to favorite spots in the US. My “French Paintings Collection” can be seen online here. Every place we’ve gone calls me back to it. Sure makes it hard to decide what the next trip should be.

My passion is for capturing life -- particularly people and animals where they gather. (That’s the impetus for those personal painting travel trips.) It has also driven me to become a plein air painter -- loving being right smack dab in the middle of the action. (Plein air is the one thing I swore I’d never do, ironically.)

Plein air competitions are balanced by plenty of exploration on my own -- with only my own drive to paint everything in sight to pressure me. ;) I’m honored to have been invited to participate in many of the top festivals including in 2026: Plein Air Easton (where I won 3rd Place!), Door County Invitational (WI), NC Plein Air (Plein Air Magazine Award), Telluride Plein Air (Top 5 Seller) and Olmsted Plein Air Invitational (#1 Top Seller). I used to think about wanting a clone -- because each time you are participating in one event, you are missing out on another. I’m attached to all the wonderful people we’ve met in all the events (plein air and art festivals) that have come before. It’s a rich, beautiful life. Other plein air events I’ve participated include: Gloucester Plein Air (VA), Knoxville’s Artist on Location, Sedona Plein Air, En Plein Air Texas, Wayne Plein Air, Mountain Maryland, Harford Plein Air and more.

Sometimes I do something spectacular. In 2011, I launched my 100 Faces in 100 Days Project, inviting friends, acquaintances and strangers of all ages to sit to have their portraits painted, allowing me to get to know my subjects and allowing my volunteers to get to know more about my passion -- painting -- in the process. For the first 100 consecutive days of 2011, I painted 100 different talking, moving faces from life and then posted photos of the paintings and reflections on the sitter and sitting on my blog (excerpts from that blog and all my faces can be found on my website here). What I learned from the project was that anything was achievable given hard work, flexibility, openness, a sense of humor and some problem-solving skills. Plus, it was exhilarating and fun living life out on a limb. That project led to my pursuing painting plein air or around town, inside and out. If people were no longer coming to visit daily in my studio, I was going to go out and find someone or something interesting to paint.

FASO Collector Recommends: Donna Montgomery

Biography

Donna is a Canadian artist and instructor from the Greater Sudbury region of Northern Ontario. During the early 1980’s, Donna moved to BC, then returned in 1985 to settle with her family in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario. Today her home is located in Southern Ontario, just north of Toronto.

Throughout her life, art has been a passion. She began painting at first in oils, and then in her twenties, she took a weekend watercolour workshop with Graham Scholes, and everything changed. The unpredictability and challenge of watercolour captivated her interest and desire to explore the medium. During the 1970’s, Donna began teaching elementary school, and earned her B.A. and B. Ed, including a Visual Arts Specialist along the way. Family and career were foremost for many years, and it wasn’t until a 2004 workshop with artist Helga Flower that her desire to return to the art world was rekindled. Donna entered local art shows and juried art exhibitions.

Her paintings won several awards over the years, and many of her paintings are displayed in homes around the world. While living in Sault Ste Marie, Donna was an active member of the Algoma Art Society. She served as its president for two years, and was also a member of her home town art club in Onaping Falls. Donna is an active member of the Barrie Art Club where she participates in member shows as well as teaching a variety of workshops. Her work is displayed in the Coldwater Mill Gallery during the summer months and continues to enter local and regional juried shows.

NEW DIRECTIONS

Donna has pursued new creative challenges and techniques by taking workshops with many well-known and established artists throughout her career. The playful and creative nature of the variety of media used in these workshops has provided her with new and exciting challenges. Recently, creating unique, colourful non-objective artwork is now part of her creative direction. Her paintings have won awards in local art shows and juried exhibitions. She is currently an active member and workshop instructor with the Barrie Art Club.

Ela Lechoszest was born in 1986 in Raciborz, Poland. Her fascination with oil painting began to flourish when an exceptional artist, Damian Lechoszest, entered her life. He later became her husband and remains the most devoted critic of her work.

After several years of being surrounded by art, Ela decided to confront her own limitations and begin her journey with oil painting. Twenty years ago, under Damian’s guidance, she started to paint and share her work publicly, choosing to do so under the pseudonym Jan Gustaw. It became her invisible cloak, allowing her to explore, create, and learn without being influenced by the opinions of the outside world. Over the course of ten years of practice, art gradually became an extension of her soul, and the canvas became a magical realm where a story could be born.

After a decade of painting under a pseudonym, Ela decided to step out from the shadow of anonymity and sign her first work with her real name. It felt like freeing a bird from its cage. Today, her easel painting, full of expression and deep emotion, focuses mainly on portraits and still lifes, often featuring the motif of butterflies, with particular attention given to the painting of light. For Ela, the butterfly has become a symbol of emergence and change - a passage from the hidden stage of creation under the male pseudonym Jan Gustaw, which may be seen as a kind of caterpillar stage, to painting openly under her own name, like a butterfly finally revealing its true form.

Ela does not limit herself to her own creative world. She actively participates in projects, group and solo exhibitions, sharing her passion with a wider audience. Her painting workshops for preschool children are like magical messages, where art becomes a form of play and a way of discovering one’s own creative potential.

Ela’s works are held in private collections both in Poland and abroad.

Blake Everflow-known simply as Everflow-is a contemporary artist, abstract storyteller, and space alchemist whose work transforms lived experience into color, character, and emotion.

Born in a small Ohio town, Everflow learned early what it meant to stand apart. Shortly after graduating, he ventured west to Los Angeles, where music, culture, and people from vastly different worlds expanded his understanding of identity and human nature. Before paint became his primary language, there was music-teaching him to listen beneath the surface, feel what could not be spoken, and recognize the rhythm within everything.

His path was not polished. It was forged through reinvention, adversity, survival, fatherhood, and the relentless search for something true. Moving through many cultures and layers of life, Everflow became a witness to the hidden stories people carry. Those experiences now live within his expressive faces, fractured forms, written language, vivid color, and deeply textured surfaces.

Each painting reveals a chapter in the architecture of becoming-the people we become to survive, the identities we outgrow, and the beauty waiting beneath the chaos. His work possesses both grit and refinement: raw enough to remain human, yet commanding enough to transform an entire space.

Today, Everflow is the founder of Everflow Paint & Design and Everflow Gallery in Richmond, Virginia. Through his evolving body of work, he is creating more than a collection. He is building a living legacy-one canvas, one room, and one story at a time.

Leah Wiedemer is an oil painter based in DeLand, Florida, renowned for her captivating exploration of equestrian themes through a spectrum of styles ranging from realism to abstracted realism. Wiedemer’s career is a tapestry of diverse experiences within the art world, having painted watercolors, illustrated children’s books, and even created sidewalk art for Disney during their Animation Celebration. Her entrepreneurial spirit led her to successfully run a mural company for a decade, while her talents also found expression in decorative painting for establishments like Darden restaurants. Despite this varied background, it was oil painting that ultimately captured her heart, steering her towards a new artistic direction where she has truly found her niche.

Her commitment to excellence is reflected in her active participation and recognition in prestigious art organizations such as the Oil Painters of America, the National Oil and Acrylic Painters Society, the American Impressionist Society, and the Women Artists of the West. Wiedemer’s work has garnered numerous accolades, including ‘Best in Show’ at the Daytona Art League annual show, an award of excellence at the OPA Eastern Exhibition and an award of excellence from the National Oil and Acrylic Society for her piece “Can I Come Too” and multiple Best in Category awards from the Plein Air Salon. Her painting “Work Friends” not only sold on the opening day of the NOAPS Best of America show but also received third place in the Women Artists of the West Early Show in 2026.

Leah Wiedemer’s artistic journey reflects her dedication to evolving as an artist. Biography

Raised in the open spaces of West Texas, I remember a love of nature and a desire to explore the land at a young age. I have vivid memories of feeling awe for the big sky and endless fields, of anticipation when we’d travel through the Caprock Escarpment, and of reverence when witnessing a dust-filtered West Texas sunset. I still enjoy exploring the land, and nature still humbles and awes me. The anticipation and gratitude I feel when composing a painting outdoors and from studying nature’s beauty and dynamic character energizes me.

My approach to outdoor painting is primarily one of information gathering. My goal is not necessarily to pack up a completed painting, rather it is to learn what I can about a place through careful consideration and deliberate use of my time and materials. Through observation, sketching, and studies, I can translate my impression of a place into a plein air piece or into the foundation for a studio painting.

The scenes I choose to paint are rarely nature’s standouts. The introvert in me gravitates to the quiet of the landscape and the bits of our surroundings that don’t receive regular pause. I like for my work to celebrate the forms and figures in nature that are worthy of, but unaccustomed to, our attention. I’m drawn to the individual expressions of trees and the curious lines of long-forgotten structures. Translating and sharing our landscape is where I find my reward as an artist.

Julie Davis was born in Galveston, Texas, and was raised in towns across West Texas from El Paso To Abilene. She grew up drawing and creating, and earned degrees from Baylor University in education and law. After she and her husband started a family, Davis worked as a freelance writer and explored black and white photography, photographing the landscape and her daughters, and learning much about composition and light in the process. She began painting in 2007.

Davis and her husband, Ben, split time between Austin, Texas, and Jackson Hole,Wyoming. Their three daughters and sons-in-law live and work in Texas and New York.

A Signature Member of Oil Painters of America (OPA), the American Impressionist Society (AIS), and American Women Artists (AWA), Davis has won awards in OPA, AIS, and AWA national shows. Her plein air work earned Best of Show in the 2023 AIS All Member Paintout in Knoxville, TN, Second Place in the OPA Wet Paint Competitions in Steamboat Spring, CO in 2026 and in Bradenton, FL in 2025, and First Place in the 2019 AIS Central Park Paintout in New York City, where she also holds membership in the historic Salmagundi Club. Fine Art Connoisseur’s Editor selected Davis for the Three to Watch article in the May/June 2026 issue and Plein Air Magazine featured her in the June/July 2020 issue. She earned Awards of Excellence at the 2025 Virtuosos of the OPA Show from judge Daniel Keys and at the 2023 Masters Show from judge Scott Christensen.

Davis teaches online and in-person workshops when her schedule allows. Her work can be found at Cassens Fine Art in Hamilton, Montana, Turner Fine Art in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, Mockingbird Gallery in Bend, Oregon, and Davis Gallery in Austin, Texas. Her paintings can also be viewed on Instagram (@juliedavisstudio).

For the last two consecutive years, Davis has been recognized by the Oil Painters of America for both of these accolades. In 2026 she won 2nd Place at the Oil Painters of America Wet Wall plein air competition, National Exhibition. Personal History : Nicole was born in 1958 and grew up in New Canaan CT, went to Parson’s in NYC, lived for a bit in SoHo then upper east side and worked in advertising for 15 yrs. Moved to Westport CT in 1991, got married, then relocated to Raleigh NC in 1996, where her husband launched one of the most successful restaurants (Caffe Luna where Nicole’s art still rotates). Nicole started painting professionally in 1999. Established Nicole’s Studio & Gallery in Raleigh 2001-2018 representing fine artists local to national acclaim becoming the #1 NC venue hosting master art workshops. Nicole now resides with her husband (Parker Kennedy) in Raleigh and Wrightsville Beach.

It was the hope of capturing our amazing Arizona sunsets which first drew me to the medium of soft pastels - “reactivating” an art degree used during the years of raising kids in diverse/creative ways, ranging from youth art instructor to prop designer for youth theater.

Whether whimsical saguaros, glowing “golden hour” desert mountains, or the reflections and shifting colors of water, my paintings are inspired by the beauty found in God’s creation. There is a great tactile pleasure in holding a chunk of pure pigment and laying down vibrant, expressive color to capture the play of light and shadow, the movement of water, the facets of stone, or a cluster of wildflowers.

The only problem: there are just so many things begging to be painted! Landscapes, waterscapes, still lifes....all can be found as you browse this site. No portraits yet, but some day. Over the past few years, I’ve been blessed with opportunities to grow as an artist through the generous instruction of some well-known and incredibly talented pastelists. Support of my work has come from the galleries where my paintings are displayed, acceptance and awards from juried exhibitions, and, of course, my wonderful collectors.

My heartfelt desire is to share the beauty and joy I find in God’s creation with others. In doing so, I feel I’m embracing a family artistic heritage. My grandfather was both a professional artist and served in WWI and WWII. He was a “Monuments Man” and oversaw the first collection center tasked with identifying and returning art work stolen by the Nazis. I hope he would be proud.

The purpose of art is to help to see , to feel, and to appreciate the world in which we live. It is concerned, not with prosaic facts, but with the poetic joy of discovering beauty wherever it may be found. In the landscape, the sea, the sky, the human soul and many other sources, art discovers and pictures for those of us who would otherwise be inarticulate, the love of God, incarnate in Christ Jesus.”

As a watercolorist, I long to embrace all the wonderful things this medium has to offer, blossoms, drips, unexpected things that happen - lost edges, movement of pigment. I want to keep them all to remember that it is very much like life itself. Most artists feel that this medium is difficult to control and the most challenging to paint with. But I feel the total opposite of this. I long for all of the uniqueness and beauty watercolors have to offer and to leave room for the viewer to fill in what may be missing or nearly suggested.

As a teacher I love to share this passion of watercolor techniques, theories and joy with all of my students. It is my hope that they find enjoyment in interpreting their world with paint, splatters, drips and color by embracing the unexpected and unplanned.

Most of my paintings are available as framed originals - those that have sold or not for sale are available as a high quality reproduction prints. In addition, I am available for work for hire and commissioned pieces - your loved child or blessed grandchild, or pet.

I had taught my FEARLESS WATERCOLORS at the Art League of Long Island and The Artists Studio at Chelsea Mansion until March 2020 when I taught exclusively on line and reached students from all of the US and internationally. I still run on-line classes every Tuesday.

Every year I do a 4-day workshop at the Landgrove Inn in Vermont which will be in October 2025 and a week long workshop in July 2025 I’ll be at the Omega Center in Rhinebeck, NY.

I am a graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology and have been a graphic artist designing marketing materials for businesses for 45 years. I recently retired from graphic design to focus entirely on my painting and teaching career. Interesting for me to notice that there are many skills that I learned at FIT and in business that I utilize in my teaching.

Artist’s Statement

As a toddler, I already was carefully observing the world around me and drawing constantly, whether on paper or bedroom walls. Fortunately, my arts-loving parents were forgiving and encouraging. Throughout school years and into adulthood I explored many 2D and 3D mediums, but pen-and-inks and oils -- later replaced by acrylics -- resonated with me. They still do.

Rather than strict adherence to a signature style or subject matter, my creative impulse determines interpretation and medium.

With brush strokes resembling the lush texture of oils, my acrylic paintings are expressive representations. Observers describe them as realistic with a touch of Impressionism, but I think that each work speaks for itself. My goal is to embrace viewers’ feelings visually, and to start a conversation or a story that can be fueled by their imagination.

Pen and ink? Now, that’s a whole other story. Different medium, different approach; a way to celebrate my abiding love for the power and beauty of line. Within the realm usually of black on white, ideas and imagery emerge from lines liberated and flowing unfettered to interpret emotion, movement, and the ephemeral.

Occasionally the spirit moves me to blend the two, pen-and-ink and acrylic, into unique visual ideas compounded by the drama of color onto paper, paint board or canvas. How much more fun can that be!

In the studio I am in a cocoon of calm when touching paint to canvas or ink to paper, and hours float by on gossamer wings. My signature may mark a piece as finished, but it is the doing -- resolving creative challenges along the way -- that is most rewarding and which completes my personal journey. The hope, then, is that the viewer’s journey with it has only just begun.

As an award winning artist and signature member of MTWS, Cynthia creates paintings that speak both to her and to others about the beauty in the world around us. She lures the viewer into her watercolors to become involved in the scene and to connect to the painting’s place and time.

She loves watercolor because it provides unique challenges while presenting opportunities to explore how colors work. It is not a medium to be totally controlled and manipulated; that is precisely what draws Cynthia hypnotically to the process, even utterly to the point of addictive. The unique spontaneity of the medium fascinates her.

After growing up in Conroe, Texas, and receiving her BFA from Sam Houston State University in 1987, she found her way to Montana. The regional scenery speaks to her and inspires her work. She currently lives in Columbia Falls, Montana, the gateway to Glacier National Park.

Without any prior art instruction, she started taking watercolor classes in 2017 at the local community college. She fell in love with the flow of the medium and has been hooked ever since. She has studied extensively with Karen Leigh in Kalispell, Montana, and other influential watercolorists: Ted Nuttall, Keiko Tanabe, Soon Y Warren, Eric Weigardt and Iain Stewart. She has joined in countless classes and tutorials to learn different ways to experiment with the medium. She knows her exploration into watercolor will provide a life-long learning journey.

Mary Gehley is a mixed media painter and gourd artist whose art combines abstract forms with figurative or representational subjects. Her background in quilting and textile art contributes to the sensitivity of color, composition and texture in her current work. Her sense of curiosity and love of experimentation combine with a patient attention to detail, allowing her to create work playfully splashed with multiple layers of paint, papers, crayon and markers combined with areas of fine precision. Mary’s work is at times whimsical and lighthearted, at times contemplative and soulful. She is inspired by the beauty of her gardens, the mysteries of hidden layers and connections, and the excitement of exploration and discovery.

I’ve come full circle.

I remember in elementary school we had dedicated art time. The teacher played music and we would quietly draw or color. A welcome respite for the teacher, it was also a favorite time for me. I still love the smell of crayons. checked my seams and if they weren’t straight, I had to pick out those stitches and do it over. She taught me to create with precision and detail. . . Later, high school and college art courses were a break from academics - life drawing, ceramics, design, but by this time, I was in “compare and despair” mode. . . I believed others’ work was always better than mine. I believed I would never be good enough at this art thing, so I put away my pencils and crayons.

As young wife and mother, I discovered quilting. The sewing machine was my old friend - an opportunity for creativity and reconnection with memories of Grandma Eva. Creating bed quilts, art quilts, quilting by hand or machine, I felt connected to history and stories, particularly women’s stories. I fell in love with fabrics, color play, and shape relationships. In 2004, I discovered gourd art making. Like quilting, gourding has strong connections to history and the human story. I learned to clean, cut, woodburn, carve and color gourds. My daughter joined me in creating the Corona Gourd Company. I shared my gourd fascination with others through art fairs, workshops and videos. I connected with a local art group to share my gourd love. Seeing the paintings and drawings in the gallery sparked my desire to draw again, and to learn to paint on canvas. Classes, workshops, demos fed my eagerness to learn, but I was still searching for my own artistic voice.

In 2019, serendipity led me to Louise Fletcher’s Find Your Joy course, followed by Nicholas Wilton’s Creative Visionary Program. It was like I was back in my childhood, listening to music, playing with paint and crayons and paper without worrying about a finished work of art. Freed from the worry of an “acceptable” result, I had fun slinging paint, experimenting with wild marks, drips and scratches, collaging bits of paper, and printing with kitchen tools. Tapping into what I loved about color, form, texture and shapes I learned to paint from my heart instead of trying to paint like others. I’m now free to be here today, crayon in hand, sharing my art story. . .because that’s what we artists do.

She came to painting later in live but has always been interested and committed to art and craft in many forms. Her working career was spent as a Registered Nurse in the small NW Ontario town where she grew up. Painting found her after she retired while living aboard a boat. Lou has taken many courses and has shown her work at various art shows in different locations in Canada and the US.

Lou is a member and a director of the Lake of the Woods Arts Community, takes parts in many online and offline art courses, and attempts to paint daily.
