Biography

My work is about the balance of inner and outer worlds. What can be seen and unseen. The spiritual emotional soul that lives in all of us and the material world we all experience. What I paint: the landscape, clouds, skies, are a universal symbol that we can all see but so often place our own meaning on.

For me painting is an act of meditation, a time to be quiet and listen to that inner dialogue, be it from my mind or a higher source. The landscape and specifically the sky are the perfect metaphor to the impermanence of this life and how nothing stays the same but instead evolves and changes as we do.

Biography

An active artist and nature-lover in my youth, after a decades-long hiatus, I recently returned to painting. When I’m not practicing painting, I practice law. As often as possible, I try to capture beauty in paint and joyfully bring something lovely into the world. To ensure I provide my best work and continue to improve, I regularly supplement my art education by taking workshops from painters I admire. And to validate that I’m continuing to improve, I enter juried art exhibitions and other events as time allows. My Paintings

I generally paint flowers, landscapes, and other natural subjects. I paint in oil on linen or cotton canvas, using archival, professional materials. If my paintings bring joy to your world, I want them to last more than a lifetime. I aim to incorporate loose brushwork, rich colors, and strong design.

At this time, I offer framed, original artworks for purchase online and occasionally through gallery shows and other events. You may find details regarding purchase by clicking on any painting listed in my portfolio, available at the “Works” tab above. These pieces are sold framed, shipped in secure shipping boxes, and are ready to hang in your space. The price of these pieces ranges from $400 to $2200, depending on the size and complexity of the piece.

In addition to my framed and fully finished pieces, from time-to-time I offer some of my small oil sketches at online auction through Daily Paintworks, available by clicking on the “Auction” tab above or at the DPW icon at the bottom of this page. I sell these pieces at week-long auctions starting at $35, unframed, or at a buy-it-now price of $100 available before the first bid is placed. Biography

As a contemporary impressionist painter, Brandi Donan paints subjects that capture the essence of life in an intimate way. Her goal is to evoke powerful emotion among her audience. Brandi’s loose style of painting depicts bold energy of movement with her expressive brush strokes.

Brandi has been involved in some form of art her entire life. As a child, she was always creating something with her hands. Her grandmother was a huge influence as she watched her paint while she was growing up. In 1999, she focused her interest in getting a nursing degree and then several years later she and her husband moved to Chattanooga, TN. In 2012, she decided to pursue a full-time art career. When she is not painting, she enjoys mountain biking, hiking, and chasing her son Ean around.

Brandi has studied under nationally known artists such as Alyssa Monks, Mia Bergeron, and Rose Frantzen. She is also a member of the American Women Artists and the American Impressionist Society and Women Artists of the West.

Biography

When she was five years, Barbara Meier declared, “I make things.” During her teenage years, her passion for drawing and crafts expanded to include black and white photography. She built a darkroom in her family’s basement and ventured to rural areas to photograph broken-down farm machinery and dilapidated barns.

She pursued a career in visual effects in Hollywood, eventually transitioning to academia. For more than two decades, she has taught computer animation at Brown University. In 2009, she began oil painting, a pursuit that has since grown into a dedicated practice. Barbara now paints on location throughout New England and beyond, and enjoys experimenting with new techniques and tackling more complex subjects.

I love to capture the feeling I have when exploring the beautiful New England coast and landscape as well as points further afield. I’m drawn to the warm sunlight on the foam crest of an ocean wave, the pillowy softness of marsh grasses, the dazzling brilliance of fall trees, and the quirky lean of tippy boats on tidal sand. I may start a painting en plein air or from reference from a trip, but I’m always trying to express what it is like to be in a specific place at a particular moment.

Biography

For as long as I can remember, I have had a love of the landscape and the luminous and endless variability of the sky.

In 2012, I finally listened to that persistent urge to pick up a brush and attempt to express with paint what has always inspired me.

The past few years have presented a multitude of challenges and discoveries; the first of which was the surprising feeling that landscape painting is what I was meant to do.

I grew up on the North Shore of Massachusetts and draw inspiration from the salt marshes and sea coast of New England. Recently, I have had the good fortune to frequent outer Cape Cod and explore its unique light and terrain.

Largely self-taught, I continue to search for the means to explore the intimate and mysterious relationship between our perceptual world and the natural beauty surrounding us.

Originally from Kyrgyzstan, Bakhtiar’s lifelong passion for drawing found its true home when he moved from Scotland to Shropshire in 2004. It was within the historic streets of Shrewsbury that he discovered a deep fascination for local architecture and heritage, often drawing inspiration from the nostalgic stories shared by the townspeople he meets.

A versatile and largely self-taught artist, Bakhtiar adapts his practice to the seasons. During the summer, he works en plein air, capturing the spirit of the landscape in watercolour. In the winter months, he retreats to his home studio to focus on oils, exploring a diverse range of subjects including florals, still life, portraits, and figurative works. His unique style in both mediums has been refined through workshops with world-renowned artists, blending technical skill with a heartfelt connection to his surroundings.

My love of nature inspired me to express this feeling through art. I love experimenting with color, style and technique. I am drawn to the motions and movement of a palette knife, satiated with paint, striking a bright white canvas. Over the years I have developed several different styles of painting.

The paint tells me how it wants to be mixed and where it wants to go.

The images I create come from my imagination and time spent outdoors on long walks with my dog.

My art is ever changing and evolving like the world around us.

My current works convey the unbalance that surrounds us. There is a static charge in the air caused by extremes. This vertical excess, positive and negative energy, is tearing at the soul of the Earth. My more muted color palettes infused with bright colors represent even though we may be surrounded by ugliness at times there is still hope, beauty and goodness if we choose to see it and change.

Biography

Casey McKee is an American painter based in Germany. His work has been exhibited and collected worldwide, including Space K Museum in Seoul, South Korea, the Moscow Biennale in Russia, and the National Arts Club in New York. His work has been featured in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, the Financial Times and in the hardcover book The Upset, printed by Die Gestalten Verlag, as well as other publications. He has been an artist in residence in several artist residencies including The Fountainhead Residency in Miami, Florida.

Working with oil paint on canvas, his works tend to be critiques on power structures and societal norms. He often uses humour or absurdity as an entry point into the subjects that he is working with.

McKee has spent most of his professional career in Berlin, Germany. He now resides in a small village in the German countryside.

Biography

Spanish artist Rubén Fernández Pereira was born in 1984 and specializes in hyperrealistic drawings. Although he had a strong interest in sketching from an early age, he did not really commit to it until 2022, when he began using the hyperrealism approach for the first time. He started receiving instruction from his mentor, the renowned German artist Dirk Dzimirsky, in 2023. He began working as a professional artist in 2024 and became an instructor at the D.R.A.M.A. (Dzimirsky Realism Art Master Academy).

In his artworks, he seeks to represent narrative scenes, personas, and emotions, employing traditional techniques primarily with charcoal or graphite on paper or canvas. He enjoys investigating the impact of light and shadow to infuse each image with significant dramatism. Details are essential to hyperrealistic drawing; thus, he deliberately accentuates the intricate elements highlighted by light to establish a focal point in each composition.

His work’s main features are the emotional expressiveness of the subjects and the careful use of compositional elements to create story-telling portraits.

“I strive to capture rhythm and light on canvas. Each new painting is like a page in my journal, and in sharing my colorful notes I aim to inspire an appreciation for the sublime in nature and humanity.”

Barbara’s artistic journey has led her along a winding road, reigniting her passion for painting. Growing up she was surrounded by nature and works of art. She remembers when her father nurtured baby falcons, and by his compassionate teaching she learned how to nurture lost or injured ducklings and crows discovered in the woods. The artistry of her mother, her earliest mentor, influenced her creative spirit. Barbara would watch as her mother sketched portraits of the neighbor’s children. Their home was filled with realist and impressionist drawings and paintings of rare falcons, landscapes and portraits.

In 5th grade her school principal became her first collector, buying a watercolor painting she’d painted for a school contest, a moment that confirmed her desire to keep painting. However, Barbara found herself enraptured by singing, songwriting, and studying classical voice during her university years, resulting in a career singing lead lyric roles in the opera houses in Germany.

Eventually Barbara returned to her American roots, where she cherished the responsibility of raising her children. As her children embarked on their own educational journeys, Barbara pursued a self-guided art education, taking courses at the Wayne Art Center and private workshops with artists throughout the country.

Barbara’s artistic experiences are a tapestry that combines the natural world, music, and a dedication to honing her craft, and she invites viewers into a realm where brushstrokes illuminate the wonders that surround us.

FASO Collector Recommends: Carol Middlekauff

I grew up in Amarillo, Texas. When I met and married Chuck in 1972, I had just graduated from the University of Texas in Austin, and he was fresh from the Navy and almost finished with drafting classes. After Chuck graduated, we moved to Denver and began to explore Colorado from top to bottom and from end to end. A trip to Yellowstone in 1975 really got us started. Since then, crisscrossing the U.S. many times, exploring parts of Canada, even driving the unpaved Alaska Highway as far as the tiny towns of Homer, Stuart, Circle, etc., we’ve put about 2 million miles on various cars! And we spent a summer camping by train across 17 countries in Europe.

As we travel, I’m compelled to take home the beauty God has painted for us. In pictures.

Chuck is an artist (www.chuckmiddlekauff.com), but as you may have guessed from all that mileage, he’s even more of a driver. He thinks of travel as a verb. KEEP MOVING. Guess what. He’s not great at stopping for pictures. Before the digital age, when all my photos were on film, I only got one chance to take my shots. If he stopped. Because we were on foot or on the train in Europe, however, I had more chances. But film and developing were expensive. Just 21 rolls of 36 in three months.

Now days, my digital point-and-shoot camera takes quick pics. Cheap. As many as I want. But I have to say our car’s windshield frames most of my photos. Absolutely nobody else has those exact shots. When Chuck does stop the car, his patience only lasts a few minutes. If I wait for a cloud to move, he honks the horn. So, I often put my feet in the exact same place others’ feet have worn the grass down and shoot those same shots.

With all of that traveling I’m also a travel writer. I wrote a Sunday travel column for the Longmont (Colorado) Daily Times-Call newspaper for five years, and editors at the Dallas Morning News, San Jose Mercury Times, Austin American-Statesman, Kansas City Star, Nashville Tennessean, and others, and editors at Sophisticated Living, American Cowboy, Western Styles, Persimmon Hill, Resources (Insurance), and The Santa Fean magazines have published my writing. And lots of my photos have shown up on those pages, too.

Besides those columns and articles, I’ve written a book, Take Someone with You to Heaven. Some of the stories are about the times Chuck and have shared the very good news about Jesus with people in prisons and jails. Others happened at Walgreens, the streets of NYC, on the running trail in Austin, etc.

Here’s why: the Bible says, “ALL have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Romans 6:23

Biography

Bithia Bjurman finds beauty in the small, unassuming corners of daily life. She notices the way light settles on a table at the end of the day, the quiet of a book left open, the stillness between moments. Working primarily in pastels, she brings these observations to life with an attention to color, atmosphere, and subtle human presence.

Her paintings have been shown in major national institutions including The National Arts Club in New York, the Butler Institute of American Art, the Hilbert Museum of California Art, and the Haggin Museum. She is a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America, a Distinguished Pastelist with the Pastel Society of the West Coast, and a member of the International Association of Pastel Societies Master Circle. Her work has also been featured in Pastel Journal magazine.

Though her path to art began later in life, her varied background informs her creative vision. Raised in rural Connecticut, she was shaped by her mother’s artistry and her father’s precision. Years spent in Silicon Valley taught her discipline and problem-solving, skills that now surface in her methodical approach to painting.

Today, her studio in the Pacific Northwest is a place of quiet focus. It is where she builds each painting from the ground up, layering color to capture the light and feeling of a moment. When she steps away from the easel, she enjoys hiking, cooking, reading, and time with her family, all sources of reflection and inspiration that inevitably find their way back into her work.

Artist Statement

I am drawn to the quiet, fleeting moments of life that often go unnoticed. My work is a search for those subtle interactions of light, color, and texture that create the atmosphere of a scene. Using soft pastels, I build layers of color to capture both the physical and emotional essence of my subjects.

Whether it is a still life, an urban scene, or a candid figure, I seek to create paintings that feel alive and immediate, inviting viewers to pause and notice the beauty in the ordinary. The process is intuitive and responsive, letting the painting guide me as much as I guide it. Through this approach, I hope to offer a window into moments that might otherwise be overlooked, revealing the quiet poetry of everyday life.

Born in West Siberia, Elena Degenhardt is an internationally acclaimed German artist, living in the South of France. She works mostly from her studio on the Mediterranean coast in Cannes, France, but also from her studio in the harbour village of Greetsiel, at the North Sea coast of Germany. She often paints en plein air, out by the sea, both locally and on her travels. Elena is an all-year-round open sea swimmer.

Master Pastellist with the International Association of Pastel Societies and Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America, Elena is best known for her immersive waterscapes, emotionally charged underwater figurative works and evocative portraits.

Her application of pastel and charcoal - in a rare for these dry mediums wet-on-wet technique, with intensive mark making, on unusual painting surfaces (including product packaging) - together with the emotional impact of her work have brought her international recognition and multiple awards.

Classically trained in art in her teens, Elena went on to do two university degrees in philology and linguistics and had a successful international career in literary research, teaching and translating for more than a decade before becoming a full-time artist in 2017.

Between 2015 and 2018, she learnt pastel painting under British artist Jo Hall, Hon. member and Past President of the SGFA (UK national drawing society), in England, took masterclass in portraiture with renowned Irish portrait painter Gareth Reid and attended a year long class in life figure drawing with Maltese artist and printmaker Jesmond Vassallo at the Malta Society of Arts in Valletta.

She has shown her work extensively in curated, invitational and juried gallery and museum shows, including Mall Galleries in London, UK (with the Royal Society of Marine Artists, Pastel Society UK and Society of Fine Graphic Art); Grand Palais, Paris; Salmagundi Club and The National Arts Club in NYC; The Atkinson Museum Southport, UK (Ruth Borchard Self Portrait Prize Finalists Exhibition); Wausau Museum of Contemporary Art, USA; Lian Yiqing Pastel Painting Art Museum, China; SolArt Gallery Dublin, Ireland; Abend Gallery, Denver, USA; and Museum Ostwall at Dortmunder U, Germany.

Elena’s work has been featured in the the major art publications, including Fine Art Connoisseur, PleinAir Magazine, American Art Collector, Pastel Journal (USA), Artists & Illustrators (UK), Beautiful Bizarre Magazine (Australia), PoetsArtists publications and Pratique des Arts (France). It is part of the Lunar Codex project, making her one of the first women artists whose art is being archived on the lunar surface, and of private collections throughout Europe, USA, Canada, UK and Australia, including that of world-renowned Maltese tenor Joseph Calleja and notable Magazu Collection.

Elena’s multicultural background and frequent relocations, both in childhood and as an adult, have influenced the choice of themes she explores in her art: lost (and found) identities, bonds and boundaries, fragility of life and fears, memory and time. Time was part of her literary research as a philologist and continues to be the main theme in her art.

Elena considers herself a realist with an impressionistic touch, mixing in abstract elements in her latest work. Painting en plein air and from life as well as hand drawing are at the root of her working practice.

“Painting is a deeply personal and reflective process for me. This explains my love of soft pastels - they create no barrier between me and an artwork. I express a lot through painting process itself, through the way I apply pastels - from a featherlight touch to the expressive mark making. A lot happens on a subconscious level. Pastels allow me to immediately translate an emotion into a visual image.”

“I paint en plein air, on location, and from life, but also from imagination and my knowledge of a painting subject, using my sketches, colour studies and my own photography as a memory support. As most of my work includes the sea, I often paint on the shore, in all weather conditions, and swim all year round. I must feel the sea, taste it, breathe it in, carry it within me to be able to work in the studio, no matter if I actually work on a sea-related project or not.”

Art is a key element in Chris Krupinski’s life. She has been drawing and painting all of her life, but discovered watercolors in the mid-1980s and has had a passion for the medium ever since. The training she received pursuing art education and graphic design degrees honed her technical abilities. But, more importantly, it is the discipline of painting everyday that has lead to her success.

Chris is a Dolphin Fellow of the American Watercolor Society, signature member of the National Watercolor Society, Transparent Watercolor Society of America (Distinguished Master), Rocky Mountain Watercolor Society, Watercolor West-Master, and Allied Artists, to name a few. She has been published in major watercolor publications and has been a featured artist in numerous leading national art magazines. Her work has been in international exhibitions in China, Russia, Taiwan, Thailand, Greece, Holland, Italy, and Turkey. Her watercolors are hung in several corporate collections and are cherished additions to the finest of private collections.

Chris’s watercolors are created with special consideration to detail. By focusing much of her attention to the smallest detail, the viewer is drawn into the intricacies of her work. Dynamic light and shadow treatments are prominent statements in her paintings. The play of lights and darks develop effective abstract design. Emphasizing these two elements has enabled her to create powerfully expressive still lifes and bold compositions.

While raising her family, Josie built a career in food photography and performed as a rhythm guitarist and vocalist in a bluegrass band. The pull of painting never left her; in 2019 she returned to the easel with a clarity and focus she hadn’t known before.

Since then, Josie has immersed herself in the tradition of classical realism, refining a personal style that blends technical precision with a deep emotional connection to her subjects. Working exclusively in oil, she seeks to capture not only the physical likeness of animals, but also their inner presence and personality.

From her home studios in Sonoita, Arizona and San Clemente, California, Josie finds daily inspiration in the natural world and her lifelong bond with animals. Commissioned portraiture holds a special place in her practice, allowing her to build meaningful relationships with clients while honoring the animals they love.

The paintings of Tibor Nagy are a testament to his unwavering determination to capture a vision shaped by his life in Slovakia, blending the tangible with the abstract. Since he began working with oils, Tibor has explored the mysterious terrain between what can be measured by the physical senses and what can only be perceived emotionally. His paintings serve as personal confessions, with a strong emphasis on emotional context.

Early in his artistic journey, Tibor’s style was dominated by a combination of realism and abstraction. By the 1980s, he leaned more toward surrealism, continually experimenting with techniques to discover his unique form of expression.

In 2005, Tibor painted his first plein air piece, marking his initial foray into landscape and oil painting. He immediately recognized the potential in this challenging yet expressive style. The “Alla Prima” approach, with its directness and expressiveness, appealed to him despite its difficulty, as it demands an uncompromising artist.

WHY LANDSCAPES ARE SPECIAL TO ME

When I observe the land, the first thing that strikes me is the feeling or mood it evokes. This initial sensation is what captivates me the most. I strive to capture the vitality and rich diversity of the scenery, focusing on the emotional context, which is crucial for me. Incorporating this emotional depth into a landscape painting is not easy. It requires courage and a willingness to venture into unknown territory, balancing control and spontaneity.

Rather than relying solely on accumulated knowledge, I stay open to surprises. It’s like being on the edge; sometimes I fall, but other times, new and unexpected possibilities for expression and technique emerge. This constant edge is where I find improvement. When thinking stops and spontaneity takes over, true art is created.

Experience has taught me to anticipate potential problems before starting a piece, to trust my intuition during the painting process, and to have the courage to leave the safe yet mundane path. Staying alive in my work is what matters most to me.

I also strive to remain open to new approaches and innovative methods, always aiming to advance beyond my current level. This openness allows new creative processes to propel me forward.

Ann T. Rudd is a contemporary oil painter with work represented in galleries in the United States and abroad. Her artwork has received numerous awards, including the BoldBrush Award for Abstract in 2022. Her figurative paintings have been published in two notable magazines: as a Finalist in International Artist magazine’s People and Figures competition in 2024 and as First Place Overall in Plein Air magazine’s Salon Competition in March 2024. Her work has recently been exhibited in museum shows. Ann is a signature member of the American Women Artists organization.

Based in Charlotte, Ann is originally from Raleigh, North Carolina. She earned a bachelor’s degree from East Carolina University, a master’s in Applied Psychology from Virginia Tech, and provided psychological services for people with special needs for several decades. Over the years, she attended classes with master artists in the Charlotte area and a myriad of online painting workshops, exploring contemporary ideas of abstraction. In addition to painting, Ann enjoys reading, couch time, beach, travel, chess, team trivia, and ongoing efforts at golf and racquet sports.

Artist Statement: I love the experience of quiet contentment. I seek it, appreciate it, and am always intrigued when I see individuals sitting quietly, alone with their thoughts. I love painting these moods with gray tones and soft edges and I challenge myself to lose as many edges as possible.

Influences: Berthe Morisot, James Whistler, Alberto Giacometti, Alex Powers, Alex Kanevsky, Ann Gale, Tibor Nagy and France Jodoin. All of those subtle colors, interesting edges and compelling moods!

Anzhei Trubitski was born and raised in Grodno, Belarus. From a young age, he was captivated by the beauty of his hometown’s nature and architecture. Inspiration surrounded him everywhere-in the play of shadows on historic buildings, the soft light of sunsets over the Neman River, and the vibrant colors of the surrounding forests. This early exposure ignited his desire to capture the world on canvas.

In 2002, Anzhei enrolled in the Belarusian Academy of Arts, where he spent six years mastering the fundamentals of fine art. The academy became a place where he not only honed his skills with paint but also developed his unique style, characterized by attention to detail and a love for landscapes.

After graduating, Anzhei returned to Grodno, where he continued creating works inspired by Belarusian nature and architecture. His paintings became a reflection of his inner world and his deep appreciation for the beauty around him.

In 2022, Anzhei and his wife moved to North Carolina, USA. The move marked the beginning of a new chapter in his life and career. The nature and culture of America opened up new horizons for his art. The Appalachian Mountains, waterfalls, the ocean, and historic cities like Charleston and Savannah became sources of inspiration for his new works.

Anzhei continues to grow as an artist, striving to merge two worlds-his native Belarus and his new home in America-through his paintings. His work is filled with warmth, light, and emotional depth, and his journey is a testament to perseverance and the pursuit of new opportunities through art.
