Biography

Mathew Nagendran (b.1991) is a Canadian representational oil painter originally from Toronto, ON, who now maintains a studio practice in Katarokwi/Kingston, ON.

Entirely self-taught, Mathew has taken an unconventional path in developing his artistic practice, evolving from an illustrative approach to the classical realism he embraces today. Mathew’s body of work focuses on the complexity of human expression, exploring both physicality and emotion to highlight the triumphs and challenges of being fully human. Inspired by Pre-Raphaelite, Baroque, and 19th-century Impressionist painters, his work strives to balance traditional techniques with contemporary aesthetics.

Notably, Mathew’s work has been featured in Free Lit Magazine, and he has exhibited with Modern Fuel Artist-Run Centre, Art Noise Gallery, Window Art Gallery Kingston, and The Union Gallery.

Biography

Teresa Lynn Johnson, an artist based in New Mexico, has been refining her oil painting expertise for many years, with a focus on western landscapes and both wild and domestic animals. Teresa was born in Coleman, Texas, and spent her formative years living on a secluded four-hundred-acre farm, where she engaged with animals and explored nature daily. This environment fostered her love for wildlife and natural settings.

Her inherent creativity led Teresa into the realm of art after initially pursuing a career as a software analyst for a global company and raising a family. She discovered her passion for oil painting early on and committed to studying through workshops with renowned artists, books, college classes, and self-study.

In 2012, Teresa commenced her professional art journey, being selected as one of twelve artists nationwide for a year-long mentorship under the guidance of noted artist Kevin Macpherson. Since then, she has shown her work in numerous exhibitions and juried shows across New Mexico, Colorado, Texas, Nevada, Utah and California, earning accolades such as best in show and top placements. Her collectors span the United States, and she has been featured in various art publications, including Southwest Art Magazine and Western Art Collector Magazine.

Teresa is currently affiliated with several prestigious organizations: American Women Artists (AWA), American Artist Professional League (AAPL), Women Artists of the West – (WAOW, Associate), and Oil Painters of America (OPA). She holds a Fine Art Certification from Sessions Professional School of Design and imparts her expertise as an instructor at The Art Connection in Aztec, New Mexico. Teresa continues to challenge herself through plein air studies and studio work.

Artist Statement

Nature or any light-filled subject fills me with inspiration and captures my imagination for a visual story. My preferred medium for creating these visual stories is oil paint, due to its rich color palette and the ability to develop texture.

When an idea begins to take shape, I typically explore it with a sketchpad, a camera, or plein air studies to create references for further development. Subsequently, I proceed by creating a tonal under-painting followed by painting with my selected color palette. Utilizing larger brushes and palette knives, I initially block in the extensive abstract areas. Gradually, I incorporate finer details with smaller brushes, meticulously ensuring that each brushstroke effectively conveys the intended narrative.

I love the challenge of painting diverse subjects, but primarily I paint animals and western landscapes. There is profound beauty in a flower that manages to bloom in an arid desert or in an elk peacefully grazing in a meadow. My desire is to capture, preserve and share this beauty that surrounds me.

FASO Collector Recommends: Diana Zawalick-Grenkow

Biography

Diana Zawalick-Grenkow is an artist who recently moved from Victoria B.C. to Grimsby, Ontario. At a young age Diana showed a talent for drawing and painting. She earned a Diploma of Applied Arts from Sheridan College for the Interpretive Illustration Program. It is her love for realism that had her decide to master still life and study classical painting in oil.

Her art is influenced through the study of Renaissance painters and modern day artists such as Noah Layne, Sara Lamb, Sadie Valerie, and Jeffrey Larson. Diana works primarily with oils on board portraying still life subject matter in a traditional style. She begins a painting by drawing on prepared board with thinned oil paint and a chisel brush, then building up layers of paint. The final layer is scumbling which allows colours to break through each other giving depth and luminosity to the painting.

Diana is an active volunteer and has held a number of positions in the arts community. She is currently a member of the Canadian Whiskey Painters, and is a member and Secretary for the Federation of Canadian Artists, Toronto Chapter. She is now settling into, and exploring, the art community in the Halton/Niagara Region. When living in the Greater Victoria B.C. area she was; Exhibition Convenor for the Federation of Canadian Artists Victoria Chapter, past treasurer and member Island Illustrators’ Society, and committee Member/Organizer 2017 West Shore Studio Tour.

Martin was born in South Carolina. He graduated from Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, Florida in 1981. He has worked as a professional artist since then. Martin’s ability to paint people and historic sites has led to 30 years of commissions with the National Park Service. Paintings of Native American life, The Underground Railroad, Civil War battles, The Battle of the Little Bighorn and many others are used by the NPS for educational purposes. His gallery paintings include the figure as well as southern landscapes, interiors, and still lifes. Martin lives in Newnan, GA.

Laurie grew up in South Africa before immigrating to New Zealand with her husband and four children over twenty years ago. She is an advocate of distance learning, having obtained a B.Compt degree from the University of South Africa followed by twenty-seven years of home educating her children. A move to the very remote Marlborough Sounds at the top of New Zealand’s South Island resulted in her enrolment with the Academy of Art University in San Francisco and her Master’s degree in Fine Art. Her fascination with place and people has resulted in an exploration of the age-old genre: The Tronie (face or head). She continues to develop her visual language through oil paint on aluminium to present her viewer with an intimate glimpse into the soul of her subjects.

Biography

Ashwini Bharathula (b.1984) is a representational fine artist specializing in oil painting, currently based in Chandler, AZ. “Growing up in India, I LOVED to draw in my spare time. My artistic journey began with sketching Disney characters and figures from Indian mythology.” Ashwini pursued a formal education in the field of Materials Science and Engineering. After completing her Bachelor’s degree at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, she moved to the US in 2005 to pursue her Master’s and PhD at The Ohio State University. A summer painting class during graduate school reignited her love for creating. After getting her PhD, she worked in the semiconductor industry for a few years. “Even while working in the corporate world, I had this constant itch to paint.” With a deep appreciation for both the analytical and the creative, Ashwini eventually left the corporate world to explore the intersection of science and art. She first launched a YouTube channel featuring educational science videos and later collaborated with TED-Ed to create animated short films. During this period, she also deepened her commitment to painting, ultimately making the leap to pursue fine art full-time. “The act of creating something realistic and beautiful from scratch brings me immense joy,” she says.

Her artistic education includes workshops at the Scottsdale Artists’ School and extensive study of foundational texts like Richard Schmid’s Alla Prima. She has studied with renowned artists such as Susan Lyon, Daniel Keys, Suchitra Bhosle, Louis Carr, Todd Casey, Ned Mueller, Adrien Gottlieb, Kathleen Speranza, and Gustavo Ramos. Today, Ashwini is also an instructor at the Scottsdale Artists’ School, sharing her passion and expertise with fellow artists.

“My painting style can be described as Representational Realism. I primarily work alla prima in oils and prefer to paint directly from life. My subjects span flowers, portraits, and landscapes-each offering me a unique opportunity to explore color, texture, and composition in depth. I find endless inspiration in floral themes; their variety and vitality never fail to exhilarate. In portraiture, I aim to go beyond mere likeness, capturing the spirit and personality of the human in front of me. I also enjoy painting landscapes and scenes inspired by my travels. Whether it’s the beauty of a rose, a mountain vista, or an expressive face, these moments spark joy in my heart and inspire me to bring them to life on canvas. Painting places me in a deeply immersive state when I stop thinking and simply create!”

Though her subjects are diverse, her paintings consistently convey a beautiful balance of form, light, and spirit - often resonating with symbolic undertones.

Unwaveringly, the Glory of her Creator has always been the main driver of her work and to which she is so grateful for each insight and breakthrough. In addition to her studio practice, Bobbi is a respected and sought-after instructor. She teaches both in-person and online workshops, mentoring hundreds of students through a refined curriculum focused on foundational principles and joyful, purposeful painting. Her teaching style reflects her own learning path - accessible, engaging, and grounded in a love for the craft.

Bobbi’s work has been exhibited in numerous national and regional shows, including with the Oil Painters of America, and she has been represented by galleries in both Canada and the United States. Biography

Ken Vonderberg has been a full-time artist since retiring from teaching in 2012 and works from his home studio in Shorewood, Wisconsin as well as a photo studio in Milwaukee. He works in various dry media as well as oils and acrylics and creates fine art woodburning (pyrography) as well. He is particularly interested in portraying the human face and figure.

Ken received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Layton School of Art and Design (now MIAD) in Milwaukee in 1968. He was a commercial interior design for 25 years in Milwaukee and St. Louis and owned his own design firm. He was the Interior Design Director for Engberg Anderson Architecture before becoming an educator. Ken was a full-time faculty member at Milwaukee Area Technical College for 19 years in the Interior Design program where he taught many courses in drawing, sketching, design and color theory. He has also taught continuing adult education art and design courses at the Sharon Lynne Wilson Center for the Arts in Brookfield, WI.

His work has been juried into a number of regional and national exhibitions. His work is displayed by David Barnett Gallery in Milwaukee, WI, the Richeson Gallery in Kimberly (Appleton), WI and Olson House in Shorewood.

Ken is a Professional Member of the Wisconsin Visual Artists (WVA) as well as a member of the League of Milwaukee Artists (LMA), The Shorewood, Wisconsin Artists Guild and The Rogues Artists Group. He is also a volunteer member of the Village of Shorewood, WI Public Art Committee.

Biography

Born in Astana, I have been living and working in Germany since 2002.
After completing my studies in veterinary medicine, I discovered my passion for painting.

My artistic development has been shaped by advanced training with renowned artists at national and international art academies, as well as through continuous self-study.

I paint with pastels guided by feeling. The color lies directly in my hand, responding to every movement and carrying light within it. Pure pigments meet the surface, and from this closeness, moods emerge - from serene calm to fleeting intensity. I work with color in its most delicate form. Pastel allows me to touch atmosphere - directly, sensitively, and vividly.

Since 2019, I have been teaching painting courses with a focus on pastel techniques. It brings me great joy to share my experience and to support others on their creative journey.

Since 2020, I have been serving as a jury member for the international pastel artists’ competition “PASTELium.”

Chantel was introduced to acrylic paint for the first time in 1990 and grew to love it so much that it became her primary medium. She found it lent itself beautifully to the looser, impressionistic style which allows her to capture and share her artistic vision of the splendor found in the human soul. So, she began an adventure in acrylic portraiture and figure painting, eventually branching out into teaching in this vibrant medium - encouraging many to try acrylic themselves.

Chantel’s work has been featured in shows and juried exhibitions nationwide and is in private and public collections worldwide. Some of her awards include Certificate of Excellence Award Winner - Portrait Society of America International Portrait Competition, Ninth Place Non-Commissioned Portrait Category and Finalist Outside the Box Category - Portrait Society of America Members Only Competition, a Second Place Award and fourteen Outstanding Acrylic awards in the BoldBrush Painting Competition, and Best Figure & Portrait and Best Acrylic in the Annual Plein Air Salon Competition.

Her work is published in Acrylic Artist magazine, American Art Collector, Southwest Art, The Artist’s Magazine, Fine Art Connoisseur, International Artist Magazine and several books. Her DVD produced by Streamline Publishing is a best seller. Chantel resides in Denison, TX where, in her studio, she creates and teaches private workshops. In addition, she teaches online and holds workshops throughout the United States

Chantel yearns to promote the human spirit in her work. She believes that when it comes to the human race, there is more that unites than divides. There is beauty in everyone, regardless of whether they measure up to society’s definition of beauty. Not only their joys, but their sorrows too. She wants to show the beauty in the human condition. Chantel is on a journey to capture the vision in her mind’s eye - the one blood we as humans share. And she does it all in acrylic - with strong color, energetic brushwork, light and story. Her loose style draws the viewer’s attention, visually beckoning them to wonder at the essence of life.

FASO Collector Recommends: Vladislav Yeliseyev

Biography

“Vlad Yeliseyev is no stranger to beautiful scenery. In fact, he’s traveled around the world to paint interesting cityscapes and landscapes. But unlike many artists who are drawn to a postcard-perfect site, Yeliseyev usually can be found around the back of a building, along the street or in an alleyway, capturing commonplace scenes,” wrote BJ Foreman in her article “Everyday Poetry” in the Watercolor Artist Magazine (Feb.2016).

Vladislav Yeliseyev is a renowned watercolor and plein air artist known for his ability to capture everyday scenes with a unique perspective. Originally from Russia, he brought his Classical Art education and a Master’s Degree in Architecture when he immigrated to the United States in the 1980s.

For over 30 years, Vladislav has lived and worked in the United States, amassing a dedicated following of art enthusiasts. His paintings can be found in personal and commercial collections worldwide.

His artwork is praised for its mastery of light and color, showcased through bold brushstrokes, skillful color schemes, and clear calligraphy. With a limited palette and minimal brushstrokes Vlad creates paintings that evoke a sense of the depicted objects rather than their intricate details. He often employs warm colors to achieve richness while maintaining the transparency of watercolor. Vlad’s intention is not to simply depict the object itself but to capture the light, leaving room for interpretation and evoking a poetic response from the viewer.

Vladislav’s artistic goal is to express as much as possible with minimal brushwork, allowing the viewer to experience the essence of the scene.

After a successful career as an architectural illustrator, in addition to his artistic pursuits Vladislav has established himself as a sought-after speaker, demonstrator, and educator in the watercolor and plein air communities. He has been invited to watercolor and plein air conventions across the United States and served as a jury member and judge for national and regional competitions. Vladislav conducts virtual workshops, plein air and studio workshops as well as hosts art holidays in Europe.

His participation in highly regarded invitational paint-outs and competitions has earned him numerous prestigious awards and accolades. To share his knowledge and technique with aspiring artists, Vladislav has released educational video master classes on DVD and streaming platforms (Vimeo, YouTube). Biography

Michael Doering (b. 1966) is an American painter and printmaker whose work merges personal history with a distinctly contemporary visual language. Born in Mason City, Iowa, and now based in Reno, Nevada, Doering was raised in a working-class Midwestern family with little exposure to fine art. Drawing from an early age with whatever materials were available, he developed a self-reliant and disciplined approach that continues to inform his studio practice.

Rooted in rural America yet engaged in the language of modern painting, Doering’s work explores themes of identity, class, memory, and contradiction. Often autobiographical, his paintings balance storytelling with abstraction, informed by the expressive traditions of Expressionism, Post-Impressionism, Abstract Expressionism, and the immediacy of street art. The result is a body of work that is both deeply personal and broadly resonant.

He earned a BFA in Studio Art from the University of Iowa, studying painting and drawing with Ben Frank Moss and printmaking with Virginia Myers. After relocating to Las Vegas, Doering spent over two decades in education, serving as a teacher, counselor, principal, and district administrator. In 2017, he returned to painting full-time with renewed focus, establishing a dedicated studio practice that has since expanded his national and international presence.

His work has been exhibited throughout the United States and internationally, including exhibitions in Dijon, France and Santiago, Chile. Through a sustained and evolving practice, Doering continues to build a cohesive body of work defined by expressive mark-making, layered surfaces, and a commitment to authenticity.

Artist Statement

My work is built on contrast. I come from a rural, small-town background far removed from major art centers, and that distance has shaped both my independence and my perspective. I did not inherit a scene; I built a practice.

As a painter and printmaker, I work through layered processes that balance instinct with intention. Influenced by the gestural legacy of Abstract Expressionism and the immediacy of street art, I treat the surface as a site of tension and discovery. I often push a piece to the edge of collapse before resolving it, allowing risk to become part of the final composition. The friction between structure and spontaneity defines my visual language.

My work is autobiographical in origin. I create from memory, class, identity, humor, and contradiction. Because it is grounded in lived experience, it carries authenticity rather than performance. Within these personal narratives are broader themes of resilience, aspiration, vulnerability, and transformation. Viewers may not share my story, but they often recognize something of their own within it.

My practice is consistent and cumulative. Each body of work builds upon the last, forming an evolving but cohesive trajectory. Over time, a distinct language has emerged, bold and layered, rooted in where I come from and committed to where the work is going.

Biography

Michelle Dahl’s figurative painting explores emotional anthropology, drawing on myth and psychological narratives to create images of resilience that communicate beyond language. Born in 1983 and residing in Southeast Tennessee, Dahl developed an early connection to observation and detail, later pursuing technical growth through publications, regional media, and college coursework. She expanded into oil painting through rigorous self-directed study and in 2013, a serious injury catalyzed a renewed focus to her creative career. She received the Ridley Gallery Purchase Award (2019) and is a member of the Portrait Society of America, OPA, and NOAPS. Her work has been exhibited widely across the western United States, culminating in her pinnacle solo exhibition Incandescent Umbra (Sacramento, 2024). In 2025, her work was selected for the Society of Women Artists’ 164th Annual Exhibition in London, and she was named Planned Parenthood’s Artist in Residence.

Artist Statement

Growing up in a rural environment, art became a means for exploration. My practice began by drawing people, animals, and artifacts found in publications like National Geographic, imagining what their lives might be like. This early desire to understand the world evolved into a pursuit to express emotional experiences through painting.

I consider painting an act of resilience, offering understanding beyond language. Motivated by curiosity, much of my inspiration stems from exploring individual emotional states, particularly moments of strength and transformation, drawing on nature, mythology, the hero’s journey. My current work interprets the hero’s journey as an internal emotional passage rather than a literal narrative. I place myself within the story, considering what it would feel like to inhabit that moment. Through this process, painting becomes a form of emotional anthropology - humanistic storytelling that invites viewers to feel seen and understood.

My approach is influenced by late 19th-century and contemporary masters who bridge academic structure with expressive interpretation. Largely self-directed, I have trained through books, online study, and engagement with peers committed to representational art. Light plays a central role in shaping both form and psychological narrative. Working in oil, I combine direct painting and glazed layers, pairing strong draftsmanship with intuitive color and restrained surreal elements to support emotionally driven narratives. While grounded in the present, my work consistently revisits themes of resilience, mortality, and emotional transformation.

Best known for her ethereal landscape and figurative paintings, Kristen Santucci’s body of work has the ability to transport viewers to the space between shadows and light, allowing us to witness the transmutation of the changing luminescence. Studying her paintings is like gazing at a subject in the pre-dawn light of consciousness between dreams and waking.

Kristen is a self taught artist who was born in Maryland in 1970. At the age of eighteen, she moved to Clearwater, Florida where she resided for over thirty years. In May of 2022, Kristen relocated to Montpelier, Vermont. The beauty of her new surroundings has inspired Kristen to focus on painting Vermont’s unique landscape.

Kristen is a current member of PoetsArtists group, where her work has been featured in several of their publications and online exclusives on Artsy.net. Her work has recently been featured in an issue of Fine Art Connoisseur Magazine. Kristen’s paintings have been collected nationally and internationally.

Biography

Ann is an American artist, who developed a love for art and for travel through her Grandmother’s influence. When she began painting later in life, she saw the opportunity to combine both. She grew up in the west but has lived most of her adult life in Tennessee. Travel has remained a focus. Her journey began in watercolor but soon progressed to oil. She has been fortunate to study with several notable contemporary artists. It is her love of the surrounding landscape, grand views, and the disappearing vistas that prompt her vision. She is particularly interested in harmonious combinations of color and subtleness of light. Each painting is a recognition of thankfulness for the incredible beauty our God has graciously bestowed upon us.

Sherri Harris is an abstract oil and cold wax painter based in Friendswood, Texas. Notably, she received the Bold Brush Award for Best Abstract Art in the June 2021 show, along with several other honors in juried competitions.

Outside of her artistic pursuits, Sherri cherishes spending time with her husband, children, and grandchildren, finding joy in the moments of everyday life. With a commitment to exploring the interplay of nature and spirituality, Sherri continues to develop her artistic voice, creating pieces that resonate with a sense of tranquility and introspection.

“What I love about abstract art is that it comes from within myself and onto to the canvas. It is authentic...what I feel now and what brings life to me, what encourages me all becomes part of my paintings. The colors, the strokes and markings tell the story I wish to tell. Kathiucia Dias, known as ‘Kat’, was born in Brazil and at an early age moved to the U.S. After spending a couple years in the East Coast, she traded in the snow for the sun and migrated to the West, happy to park and call SoCal home for almost two decades. Professionally, Kat started off working as a painter (prototype and conceptual) for the entertainment industry (movies and commercials you perv) until she decided to pursue a career in Fine Art. Since then, she has further pursued an education, modeled, taught at various schools, managed and opened ateliers, and has sold and worked with galleries and museums all over the country. She currently tutors, sells art, and tattoos in Rochester, NY... and is back on the East Coast!

As an artist Kat seeks to unfold visual narratives with her work with lots of little hidden gems to make it an act of discovery and providing a funner ‘read’ as the viewer discovers their own meaning behind the art.

Biography

Nina was born and raised in suburban Philadelphia. Her earliest exposure to fine art was when her mother volunteered in public elementary schools with a program called “Art Goes to School.” This innovative program exposed her to a variety of artists and their work Her father, an award-winning photographer, also influenced her own lens. This background, along with a liberal arts education, cultivated an appreciation for how art is a conduit of connection. As a newer artist in her mid-50s, Nina feels that she is making a radical re-discovery of self, enhanced by the act of creating.

Artist statement

The fluid nature of vibrant alcohol ink colors in my paintings calls to mind botanical, water and landscape subjects. Many of my paintings incorporate layer upon layer of inks building to a crescendo of textured compositions. There is a wonderful mix of delicacy and highly saturated color interwoven in my paintings. That is the magic of how I work with alcohol inks - to allow them to flow and then control the final placement. Several works evolve into mixed media as I add acrylic paint and fine liner pen details.

Alyse is a figurative painter working out of New Orleans, Louisiana. She creates compositions combining the figure with elements of nature with surreal twist. With each mark a bridge is formed in pigment, connecting this inner world of thought and emotion to the outer world, inviting the viewer inside.”
