Biography

Nina was born and raised in suburban Philadelphia. Her earliest exposure to fine art was when her mother volunteered in public elementary schools with a program called “Art Goes to School.” This innovative program exposed her to a variety of artists and their work Her father, an award-winning photographer, also influenced her own lens. This background, along with a liberal arts education, cultivated an appreciation for how art is a conduit of connection. As a newer artist in her mid-50s, Nina feels that she is making a radical re-discovery of self, enhanced by the act of creating.

Artist statement

The fluid nature of vibrant alcohol ink colors in my paintings calls to mind botanical, water and landscape subjects. Many of my paintings incorporate layer upon layer of inks building to a crescendo of textured compositions. There is a wonderful mix of delicacy and highly saturated color interwoven in my paintings. That is the magic of how I work with alcohol inks - to allow them to flow and then control the final placement. Several works evolve into mixed media as I add acrylic paint and fine liner pen details.

Alyse is a figurative painter working out of New Orleans, Louisiana. She creates compositions combining the figure with elements of nature with surreal twist. With each mark a bridge is formed in pigment, connecting this inner world of thought and emotion to the outer world, inviting the viewer inside.”

Biography

Robin Wessman was born in Boston and is a life-long resident of Massachusetts. He earned a Master of Fine Arts degree with a major in painting from Ohio University and a Bachelor of Fine Arts & Education degree from the University of Massachusetts, North Dartmouth. He creates paintings of ordinary objects and places that offer visual stories about the beauty of nature and the interactions of people with each other and their surroundings. As a resident of Cape Cod he is surrounded by the natural beauty of the Cape Cod National Seashore and the energy of creative people who make Cape Cod their home. He employs the indirect method of painting which begins with sketches and studies from life, followed by a combination of direct paint application and layers of transparent paint. One constant in all his work is the exploration of light and how it affects form and creates atmosphere. He currently is a member of the teaching staff at Cape Cod Art Center in Barnstable, MA. His work is represented by several galleries and may be found in private collections throughout the US and internationally.

Statement

As a classically trained contemporary realist painter my work is playful, contemplative, and at times a bit surreal, although not usually all at once, but sometimes. My paintings are a combination of observation, imagination, experience and a continuous drive to develop my skills. I paint objects or scenes that have the potential to go beyond the obvious and inspire viewers to see more than an accurate depiction of the subject. I enjoy the challenge of examining my subjects more closely through the process of painting and discovering new ways to express my ideas. Sometimes I paint scenes in nature that I find beautiful and inspiring, other times I paint to express emotions or ideas that move me in some way. It could be the beauty of the Cape Cod National Seashore where I live or an experience that provokes thought or emotion. Regardless of subject, I paint what inspires me. My desire to push technical craftsmanship along with emotion and implied narrative is what excites me as a painter. My approach with every painting is to enjoy and learn from the process every time I paint. Sharing the results of my experience with each painting is also part of the process, as I believe we are always looking for ways to connect with others. Seizing the viewer’s attention long enough to make some connection that evokes emotion, provokes thoughts, or recalls memories helps keep us engaged.

Cecy Turner is an award-winning artist and a Texas native. She graduated from Vanderbilt University and did post-graduate study in art at University of North Texas and has studied under numerous accomplished artists in both oil and watercolor. Feature articles about her have appeared in Art of the West Magazine, Artists Magazine, Watercolor Artist Magazine (cover), The Best of Flower Painting, and she was chosen by Southwest Art Magazine as an “Artist to Watch.” Cecy holds Signature Memberships in American Impressionist Society, National Oil and Acrylic Painters Society, National Watercolor Society, Western Federation of Watercolor Societies, Outdoor Painters Society, American Women Artists and Plein Air Artists Colorado. She is a Master Signature Member and Past President of Women Artists of the West. She has won awards in numerous juried competitions. Cecy prefers to paint plein air, and since she began spending half of every year in Colorado her plein air painting has increased to almost daily. She delights in discovering a place she can see something very special about and convey that feeling to others in her work, making it her own. The effects of light and atmosphere are her favorite things to capture in paint. She has enjoyed teaching classes and workshops in both oil and watercolor.

Biography

I was born in New Zealand and currently live in Australia.

My passion is creating contemporary romantic realist paintings, conveying thematic subjects enhanced by a style displaying maximum visual clarity.

I strengthen my paintings by carefully choosing my composition, lighting and preferred usage of stylization.

In my early 20s, I spent many hours in the University of Auckland library, where I discovered translated copies of old books on the techniques of the early painters.

Though I was not a student, I had access to the art library.

The artists who inspired me the most were Vermeer, Caravaggio, Ingres, Jacques-Louis David, Bouguereau, Leighton, Draper, Poynter, Dali, and Annigoni, to name a few.

Art books that have significantly impacted me include Artist’s Techniques in Golden Age Spain: Six Treatises in Translation, 50 Secrets of Magic Craftsmanship by Dali and The Romantic Manifesto by Ayn Rand.

My typical painting technique is to model a monochrome underpainting,
then add the glazing by painting many thin layers of pure oil colour
to achieve a vibrant over-painting.

Stylistically, my most significant influence is Salvador Dali - not because of his surrealism but because of, within his best paintings, the radiant clarity his style projects.

My oil paintings and giclée prints are now owned and enjoyed by private art collectors internationally.

Biography

Authentic Western Art has always held a special place in my heart. I grew up on a family-run cow-calf operation in Southeastern Colorado and my family has been involved in agriculture in the area since the beginning of the Twentieth Century. My art is intended to document, preserve, and honor the culture and values of ranch life in the American West. I convey this through authentically captured snapshots of my family and friends, who continue to preserve Colorado’s shortgrass prairies, and put in long, hard workdays to provide food for the world. Hollywood, and even much of the current Western Art World itself, often portrays a romanticized, fantastical version of ranch life, and the American West in general. To counter the overabundance of inaccurate portrayals of current and past ranch life, I endeavor to authentically portray real cattlemen and women and the animals in their care.

I strive for realism, not only in my subjects, but also through meticulous rendering. Working in dry media allows me to have the control necessary to achieve fine detail. While my primary medium is graphite, I also integrate charcoal and carbon pencils as a means of extending my value range. The physical characteristics of each of these media cause them to reflect light differently, which I manipulate to convey texture, atmosphere, and light. Combining multiple media in this way results in an image that is not simply black and white, but includes a range of warm and cool tones. My process is both additive and reductive, and utilizes a variety of layering, blending, and erasing techniques to create depth and replicate realistic textures. The result I strive for is an image reminiscent of a gelatin silver photographic print, with a nostalgic, yet timeless, feel.

Biography

Jean is an award-winning Arizonan with an established national reputation. Her oils and pastel works have been featured in many respected publications (North Light Books, National Geographic, and Pastel Journal Magazine, for example.) Her paintings consistently garner recognition in local, national and international art shows. She has studied with some of America’s foremost artists at the renowned Scottsdale Artists School.

Born and raised in a small town in Oregon, Jean Hildebrant found herself drawn to the beauty of art at the exceptionally early age of three. With a love for art growing within, Jean spent most of her free-time drawing to develop her gift. As her personal style began to develop, she discovered that she especially enjoyed working in oil and pastel mediums. As Jean continued seeking out ways to improve her talents, she attended workshops held by local artists and enrolled as an art major in the local college. As a result of her efforts, she won two scholarships to Scottsdale Artists School, based strictly on the merit of her work.

She has studied with nationally known artists Albert Handell, Richard McKinley, Phil Beck, Robert Lemler, Michael Malm, Susan Lyon, Johanna Harmon, Suchitra Bohsle and Clayton J. Beck 111. Artists that have influenced her work include John Singer Sargent, Joaquin Sorolla and Anders Zorn. Jean’s favorite subject is the human soul. Specializing in portraits and figurative works, she desires to capture the essence and inner beauty of the human spirit through the use of light and color. She wants her paintings to speak to the emotions and spirit of each person who views them. She paints realism with the purpose of leaving an indelible impression. Jean has exhibited and won numerous awards in local and national shows.

Among these accomplishments are the Pastel Journal Magazine’s 2006 “Pastel 100” competition placing first in the portrait/figure category; the Pastel Society of America’s National Annual Exhibition, New York, NY ( B. & V. Giffuni Purchase Award); Pastel Society of America’s Master Pastelist and Award Winner Exhibition, Kentucky; Pastel Society of Oregon National Annual Juried Show, Purchase Award and First Place Award; Pastel Society of the West Coast Juried Exhibition, California; Don Ruffin Memorial Exhibition, Phoenix, AZ receiving the Paradise Valley Community College Purchase Award and the Award of Merit and Arizona Artists Guild Juried Exhibitions receiving numerous awards. She received several Best of Shows in Arizona Pastel Artists Association Exhibitions among other awards and Best of show in Portrait Society of Arizona. exhibition as well as other awards. She is a charter member of the Pastel Society of Oregon and past Exhibition Chairman, a juried member of the Arizona Artists Guild and a member of the Fellowship of Christians in Portraiture. Her work is found in private, public and corporate collections and has been published by National Geographic Children’s Books and North Light Publications. She now resides in Scottsdale, AZ with her husband, Michael.

Sometimes I wish that I could be the person that is completely excelling at one thing- although that is not me. I am, however, a focused creative person. I have to create!

I love painting animals, the landscape, even people in pastel and oils. I am also a musician, playing the trumpet in a church orchestra and jazz band. I have had sheep and goats, along with angora rabbits and spun their fiber into yarn. I love gardening and growing my own food. Just give me that countryside!

Southwest Magazine Interview:

He received a bachelor of fine arts degree from Louisiana Tech University in 1978 and pursued a career in graphic design. In 1989 he traveled to Helsinki, Finland where he spent four years. There he obtained an MBA degree from the Helsinki School of Economics. It was not until 1998 that he developed an interest in oil painting after having taken it up as a creative antidote to the structured advertising world where he was working as a designer and illustrator. He became further motivated to continue on this path of expression when he enrolled in painting classes at the Denver Art Students League.

The dimensions of his canvas are determined by the story needing to be told. Robert works mainly today with larger format pieces. “These large panels have a greater area from which to explore the creation of complex shapes.” Robert explains that his art is not about any one approach but it is about developing as an artist by exploring various visual approaches. The discoveries he makes along the way are what fuel his desire to be an artist.

It is most important that I explain here, my current influences are NONE. By that I mean that the visual path Ive developed has come from my accumulative knowledge and now that path before me is my own.

Biography

Suzy has little formal art training, but was exposed to art at an early age through her mother, who was a painter. She graduated from Auburn University with a degree in Mathematics Education and taught high school for 4 1/2 years. Taking a leave of absence, she spent a year overseas in Poland. On returning, she did some part-time graphic design work for a local missions agency, and was eventually hired to help with their publications. There she was mentored and nurtured in her artistic talent, and encouraged to paint for illustrations used in the magazine. When her mentor and boss left to go on the mission field six years later, she was told she needed to leave her job and paint full time, which she did.

She has painted full-time since 1995, and has won many awards for her work. Her work has been featured in American Art Collector, Fine Art Connoisseur, Drawing, Watercolor Magic, The Artist’s Magazine and The Art of Watercolour magazines. She has also had work published in Strokes of Genius 2, 3, 6, 12 and13 and Art Journey: People, (Northlight Publishers), Splash 13, 21, 22, 23 and 26, (F & W Media) and Oxford American.

Her work has been juried into many shows, including The Philadelphia Watercolor Society, National Watercolor Society, American Watercolor Society, San Diego Watercolor Society, Southern Watercolor Society, Fort Wayne Museum of Art Contemporary Realism Biennial, and “Georgia Artists Select Georgia Artists” at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Atlanta, GA. She is a, 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022 Art Renewal Center Salon Finalist. Her work recently won the first place award at the Georgia Watercolor Society National Show, and was purchased by the Morris Museum of Art in Augusta, GA, for it’s permanent collection.

Graphite Artist, Watercolor Pencil Artist

Patsy Lindamood is a self-taught graphite artist whose creative journey began later in life and has evolved into a distinctive voice in representational art. Initially focused on wildlife, her subject matter now spans a diverse range of “scapes”—from rugged workboats and wading birds to grain silos, abandoned homesteads, and architectural landmarks such as courthouses and cathedrals. Balancing a career in finance and technology with her artistic pursuits, Lindamood has built an impressive body of work that reflects both technical mastery and a deep appreciation for form and texture.

Her achievements include Non-Resident Artist membership in New York City’s historic Salmagundi Club and signature memberships in the International Guild of Realism, American Artists Professional League, Allied Artists of America, American Plains Artists, Society of Animal Artists, and Artists for Conservation. In 2024, Lindamood was honored as Rockport Master Artist, culminating in a solo exhibition, Rockport Coastlines, at the Rockport Center for the Arts in Texas. Her graphite work Cathedral of the Madeleine earned Third Place in International Artist Magazine’s Art Prize Challenge No. 143 (Cityscapes), and her pieces have repeatedly been recognized as finalists in the prestigious ARC Salon Competition. She also received an Honorable Mention for Shadow Play in the 2025 Almenara Prize, with multiple other works included as finalists, and has been a Strokes of Genius finalist for five consecutive years.

Working exclusively on cradled Ampersand Claybord, Lindamood applies graphite in a painterly manner, a technique inspired by her earlier experience with pastels. She believes compelling graphite art demands strong composition, dynamic shapes, and a full range of values to create depth and dimension. Through this approach, Lindamood transforms a monochromatic medium into works of striking realism and emotional resonance.

Biography

Jeffrey Weekes is a Toronto-based artist whose work explores light, nature, and the human form. Using a wide range of mediums such as graphite, charcoal, ink, oils, watercolour, and acrylics, he creates in styles ranging from still life to figurative, landscapes, and abstract surrealism.

Many of his figurative and surrealist pieces mix traditional techniques with a playful, whimsical touch, allowing each artwork to tell its own story. This blend invites viewers to engage with the narrative and explore their own imagination.

After raising his children, Jeffrey pursued part-time studies at the Academy of Realist Art in Toronto. His work has earned recognition worldwide, including awards from the Art Renewal Center and exhibitions at Sotheby’s New York. His art is also part of private collections and the Polaris Collection on the moon.

Inspired by the details of nature, antique craftsmanship, and the beauty of the human body, Jeffrey aims to create art that sparks awe, curiosity, and a deeper connection to the world.

Artist Statement:

As a visual artist, I am captivated by the interplay of light within the natural world and the inherent beauty of the human body, sexuality and the complexities that exist between our inner world, balanced with our relationship to the outer world that surrounds our lives. My work, created primarily with graphite, charcoal, colored chalk, and oil paint, reflects an eclectic range of inspirations, resulting in unique and varied imagery. I find allure in the textures of gnarled wood, the history of antiquities, and the character of old tools, which often weave their way into my pieces. The softness of the female nude juxtaposed with the strength of the male nude serves as a powerful exploration of form and presence. I embrace spontaneity in my creative process, allowing each piece to develop organically, letting the narrative unfold intuitively. This fluid approach enables me to capture the essence of my subjects in a way that is both personal and universal, inviting viewers to engage with the stories embedded in each artwork.

Biography

After earning a BA in Psychology at UC Irvine, I began studying photography. Immediately enthralled by the ‘wet’ darkroom process, I started working extensively with the black and white medium. My 1st teacher was Barbara Kasten. The 1st lecture I ever attended was given by Ansel Adams. I was hooked!

Photography quickly became my way of discovering, exploring, and relating to the world. Using my camera to capture illusions of reality on film by utilizing the raw purity of black and white photography was intrinsic to the work. I explored a myriad of ideas using different photographic techniques (infrared film, solarizations, unique perspective, close-ups, self portraits, etc.). Wanting to find a way to enrich my images with ‘a little special something’, I began to focus my efforts on hand coloring. I found that this century-old technique supplied my work with that surreal edge that I had been seeking. Hand painting techniques allowed me to amplify the mystique and intrigue of a particular scene, enhancing the emotional and spiritual content of the image with the paint, primarily oil applied with cotton and QTips.

Another aspect of my work was that I printed all my images full frame, displaying the edge of the negative in the final print. The significance of this is that I did not do any cropping other than with my camera while I was out shooting my film. It was fascinating to be fully aware of what I had in that 35mm field of vision.

As I delved deeper and deeper into the dreams that lay in the back on my mind, I experimented with heavy oil paint application using techniques acquired through the teachings of Holly Roberts. Most are done on self portraits, resulting in a cathartic experience as they evolve and create themselves during the painting process.

Employment as a professional photo retoucher in San Francisco, working as an intern at The Museum of Photographic Arts in San Diego and participating in various workshops, contributed to my photographic art. My work has been exhibited in galleries and has received numerous awards. The opportunity to teach photography at a private high school in Albuquerque took me to New Mexico in the fall of 1996. After 3 intense, rewarding years of teaching, my desire to pursue my art more full time led me to Colorado in the year 2000.

As the world of photography changed radically with the advent of digital imagery, I resisted the switch over. In 2007 I began to reinvent myself as an artist and shifted focus. Having worked with oil paint for many years, it was a natural evolution to extend my oil painting techniques to a blank canvas. I also enjoy working with mixed media and collage, often using vintage photographs to tell a story.

At long last I learned to embrace digital photography and have found that working with the digital medium feeds my soul as did working with film. I always have my iPhone in my back pocket and can be found toting around my Nikon D90 as well. I love photographing the incredible beauty of the Arkansas River valley, that which I call home. Plus, I now have thousands of fun, fabulous photos of my beloved kitty cats and my hysterical hens! What an amazing treat to not have to get in the darkroom with all those chemicals to process film and print the images any longer (even though I still have film in my freezer!).

Now working with Photoshop, space and time evolve in whole new way with unlimited possibilities; the rewards are many, and learning how to work with all the tools is an endless exploration filled with excitement coupled with a great deal of frustration. Ha!

My digital imagery consists of combining my original photographs, manipulating them into composites to impart a message and elicit an emotional response in the viewer. My passion is creating thought-provoking art.

Renting studio space at Community Arts, T. Rex Hall in Salida mid-2025 began my exploration into a series of acrylic paintings of women, on the edge of the canvas. The idea for this series came from a dream.

Artist’s Statement

My artwork is rooted in a deep connection to the natural world, expressed through abstraction. I am especially drawn to the emotional presence of flowers and gardens-places where memory, beauty, and impermanence meet. Using soft pastel, acrylics, and oil on canvas, I translate the rhythms and gestures of nature into expressive marks, luminous layers, and vibrant color fields.

My process is intuitive and layered, often beginning with energetic gesture and ending in quiet contemplation. I let the painting evolve organically, allowing the spirit of the moment-whether from my own garden or a passing impression-to guide me. Each piece becomes a conversation between intention and spontaneity.

Though I discovered my creative voice early, it wasn’t until later in life that I could fully devote myself to the path of a professional artist. That journey has given me a deep appreciation for resilience, reinvention, and the power of art to connect us to something greater than ourselves.

In addition to creating, I find joy in teaching and encouraging others to explore abstraction through workshops and mentorship. I believe that art is not only a form of personal expression, but also a powerful tool for reflection, growth, and community.

Biography

Sal has spent over 50 years in the field of art. He has worn many hats, so to speak, and has enjoyed them all.

After graduating from The School of Visual Arts in NYC, he pursued a career in illustration, which was his main focus in school. He thought that would be it for his entire career. He loved the assignments and was thrilled to be a working illustrator living and working in New York. However, another opportunity presented itself...a position as an art director in the book publishing arena. He later became an art director at Ladies Home Journal magazine, which turned out to be his favorite job. While working there, he met a lot of artists’ agents and that planted the germ of an idea for a new career path. He felt that he was better qualified to represent artists as a result of his experience as a working illustrator and as an art director... knowing both sides of the coin proved to be invaluable. He was an artists’ agent for 25 years, forming his own company and representing over 30 illustrators from around the world. His company was highly successful until the computer came along and changed everything.

25 years ago he started to paint again. While he started out as a realistic painter, today his approach is using the imagination to form the landscape. He uses acrylic, oils and mixed media, creating scenes that start out as abstracts until certain shapes direct him toward a scene that he can further develop.

When painting a still life, he uses oil on panel. Some setup reference is used as a starting point, but he pushes the paint in trying to achieve a mood and style that is his own. He enjoys experimenting with all types of different media, textures and materials to keep things fresh and exciting.

Biography

Delight in nature was instilled in Kris in her childhood, spent at the edge of a lake in northern Wisconsin. That same small lake now provides the view and inspiration from the windows of her studio. Her father and her uncle were artists who generously passed on their passion for capturing the natural world in watercolor.

After earning an art degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Kris studied graphic design. As an art director and account executive, she enjoyed creating illustrations for her clients’ product graphics. Since 1999, Kris has directed her creative energy toward fine art. Watercolor’s transparency and vibrancy, combined with an element of surprise, continue to keep her interested in this challenging medium. Frequent travels with her husband, Dick, provide fresh input and continue to inform her way of interpreting the world around her.

When Kris was selected by Watercolor Artist magazine as “One to Watch” her work took on a national and international direction. Four of her paintings are in the permanent collection of the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum, purchased from its Birds in Art exhibitions. Artists’ Network selected Kris to serve as the Animals and Wildlife Category Awards Juror for the Artist Magazine 39th Annual Art Competition.

Her award-winning paintings and articles have served as covers of Watercolor Artist and American Artist Watercolor magazines, and as finalists in the International Artist magazine competitions. Her work is regularly included in the annual publication Splash: the Best of Watercolor. Kris has earned signature status in international watercolor societies: American Watercolor Society, National Watercolor Society, Transparent Watercolor Society, and Watercolor West. She also holds signature status in regional and state societies: Southern Watercolor Society, Florida Watercolor Society, Kentucky Watercolor Society, Missouri Watercolor Society, and Florida Suncoast Watercolor Society. She is an associate member of the Society of Animal Artists.

Her work is in the Collection of the Woodson Art Museum, The National Parks, The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, West Bend Insurance, Jack Richeson Inc, Robert Stock Collection, and many private collections.

Eric Bowman was born in Pasadena and grew up in Orange County, California where he was always the class artist throughout his elementary and high school years. Early on, various art-related jobs such as silk screen T-shirt printer or surfboard airbrush artist led to a lengthy and successful career as a commercial illustrator, eventually transitioning to fine art painting.

As a painter, Eric has exhibited in national & regional exhibitions in galleries and museums across the country, including the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum Oklahoma City, OK; the Autry Museum, Los Angeles, CA; the Briscoe Museum, San Antonio, TX; the Couse-Sharp Historic Museum, Taos, NM; the Eiteljorg Museum, Indianapolis, IN; the Gilcrease Museum, Tulsa, OK; the Kaiping Art Museum, China; the Academy Art Museum, Easton, MD; the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles and the Salmagundi Club, NYC. Artist Statement

Creating abstract art is an intuitive, visual conversation. It allows me to connect with myself and others. Nature and the unseen inspire me. I seek something new in each painting that resonates spiritually. I begin with a blank canvas and curiosity. Instinct drives my initial choice of color and medium: acrylic, watercolor, gouache, collage, and ink. I experiment with unconventional tools, textures, water, and physicality. I am searching for a painting that speaks to me. Some pieces resolve quickly while others are layered, inviting a process of construction and deconstruction. It has always been about letting go.

Artist Biography

Lysha Montiel, an abstract artist, was born in Tucson, grew up in Southern California, and moved to Santa Fe in 2005. She currently resides in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

She is primarily self-taught. She continues to grow as an artist by taking abstract painting classes annually, with Michael Ottersen. Her M.A. in Counseling Psychology/Depth Psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute and her B.A. in Religious Studies from California State University, Northridge inform her process, evoking elements of the collective unconscious, archetypes, and mythology.

She chooses unique tools, approaches, and mediums. Her work is poetic, profound, gutsy, symbolic, and atmospheric, with a hint of landscapes. She builds ephemeral worlds with visionary and fantastical elements, sometimes later to be torn down, buried, and unearthed. Her work reflects an openness that invites the viewer to project.
