Biography

Nancy Calder is a Stratford based contemporary realist artist who focuses primarily on still life painting.

Nancy was born and raised in Toronto and a number of years ago relocated to Stratford Ontario.

Although her journey didn’t begin until later in life when time and finances allowed, it was more than rewarding. Her education started with graphite, moving into carbon, charcoal and finally oil paint. Initially Nancy enrolled into the Academy of Realist Art to pursue her love of the human figure, but as she progressed through the program, she became very fond of painting still life. In the fall of 2013, she earned her diploma. During the first two years following her graduation, Nancy became the first female instructor at the Academy. Late in 2015 Nancy left her teaching position in order to become a fulltime artist.

Artist Statement:

“I have always been drawn to realism, to create a sense of life and living from a blank canvas or piece of paper. I find the concept of realism, absolutely fascinating. I am always surprised and amused by the degree of dimension that can be achieved, a feeling that one can almost reach into a painting and touch the objects in a still life, or catch the eye of the of the subject in a portrait. I love both the intensity and vibrancy of the oil paints, yet it can also be such a subtle medium. I choose objects for my still life that appear to have had a life of their own, asking the viewer to wonder how they have found their way to become one of my paintings. My stories are from a moment in time, a little curious and vaguely familiar.”

Biography

Being surrounded by nature is where I find my greatest inspiration. Spending time outdoors totally immersed in nature allows me to experience gratitude and appreciation for each day even when the days are troubled. The sounds, smells, and sights are all part of the artistic experience for me. I hope that when someone views my art they will be able to feel some of the joy and peace I have experienced while painting. When we take the time to slow down we are only then able to fully experience a true sense of gratitude and serenity.

My paintings are a dance between abstract and representational. I love creating texture and juicy brushwork that ties in with my color palette and the composition of my painting. I have had the opportunity to travel to many interesting and beautiful locations throughout the world and can’t wait until my next painting adventure wherever that lands me.

Biography

In studying for my BFA in Art with a major in printmaking I was classically trained in all forms of the discipline. After graduation I entered the pre-press commercial printing world transitioning from mechanical to digital presses. Eventually my natural design workflow included Photoshop to plan my compositions and retouch photographs. Once I retired from advertising, without deadlines or commissions, I was able to expand my skills and really explore the artistic advantages of adjustable, interactive layers, and pursue my own subject matter. I thought I would transfer my finished images to traditional media, but realized that the art was in the planning and editing. Slavish copying to traditional media was not my inclination and I found it stifled my creativity. It seemed an unnecessary step as I had already perfected my images. It was not long before I was challenging myself to stop relying on photographic pixels altogether and start creating images from scratch. Tweaking programs to do my bidding is a new way of creating, but I still I use a 27” display as my canvas and a standard mouse to control my “brush”. My realistic images, in particular the Anachronisms Series, comment on the transition from analog to digital in everyday life. My work ranges from photo manipulation of original photographs to computer generation such as fractals, drostes, and kaleidoscopes. In 2023 I started working with Rebelle 6 and a pad with stylus. This is allowing me to learn new ways to emulate traditional media such as watercolor. You can find my work at janusroseart.com.

I have been painting for numerous years, especially since my retirement. My early training in art was from an art school located in Nyack NY. I have an associates degree in respiratory therapy. ( A far cry from the art world!) I worked as a respiratory therapist for many years until retirement due to a kidney transplant. (Successful I might add !)

I paint intuitively. I’m not sure where most of my creative ideas emerge from. I’ll approach a painting with specific colors in mind, and then it takes off from there. Lately I have discovered oil and cold wax. This is an exciting medium with many challenges, but one I thoroughly enjoy.

My goal in abstraction is to allow the viewer to come away with a sense of emotional attachment to the painting. I try to let the viewer interpret many things in the work. If my painting draws you in for a closer look I’ve been successful.

Giannis Varsamoudis is a visual artist based in Alexandroupolis, Greece, specializing in painting and drawing. His work spans a diverse range of subjects, including landscapes, portraiture, and the human figure. Drawn to its luminosity, transparency, and fluidity, Varsamoudis uses watercolor as his primary medium of expression.

He has exhibited his work extensively in both solo and group exhibitions across Greece and internationally, including prominent shows in Madrid and Rome. His artistic practice has been recognized with numerous distinctions in international painting competitions.

In addition to his creative output, he is deeply involved in art education, conducting specialized workshops in watercolor, charcoal, and pastel. These programs are designed for a wide range of participants, including children, teenagers, and adults, focusing on both technical mastery and artistic development.

He is an active member of the Chamber of Fine Arts of Greece (EETE).

Biography

I was that kid, from Kindergarten on, who was always called upon to draw a pumpkin or Santa Claus for class but I was more interested in the Beatles, cool clothes, cars and girls.

I attended the Colorado Institute of Art studying Commercial Art in the mid-70s, but there was golf to play and skiing to do so any artistic endeavors stayed quietly on the back burner. When I moved back to Kansas City in 1988 I had some success with pen and ink illustration for Coca-Cola USA and when more life happened, I decided to actually be an artist and to make my art expression more of a challenge. Though I consider myself 90% self-taught, I studied watercolor for a short time with Tom Nelson, a Kansas City Art Institute instructor, and began painting in 2008.

I now have paintings hanging in private collections from San Francisco to St. Louis and yet I’m still learning; every day I look forward to taking my art to a higher level, and I am, with awards in Plein Air and local art shows and showing my work in local galleries.

With intuitive energy and the use of bold strokes, light, and texture, Linda strives to capture the mood and emotion of her environment. Her paintings appear vividly representational, but upon closer inspection, one can see the intimate nuances and abstract tendencies which elevate and enrich her work.”

Growing up an ‘air force brat’, Linda travelled extensively across Canada, and settled in Alberta. Her creative ability was readily evident as a child and eventually was able to follow her destiny. Her education consists of formal training in Red Deer College (Art &Design) and U Of C BFA program as well as numerous workshops with acclaimed artists. Linda is a prolific artist and enjoys a variety of tools (her favorite being the palette knife). Living in Calgary and painting full-time, she has enjoyed many successes and accolades. in Canada she is represented by Mountain Galleries in Banff, Jasper, Whistler and The Avenue Gallery in Victoria BC. In The USA, The Bronze Coast Gallery in Oregon, Cole Gallery in Washington. And The Frame of Reference Gallery in Whitefish Montana. Linda’s paintings are enjoyed in both corporate and private collections across Canada and world-wide.

INSPIRATION

All my landscapes are inspired in some way or another by the environment surrounding me whether it be a specific mountain, waterfall or an abstract shape. If my heart skips a beat I take a second look to absorb and analyze. The simplest things capture my attention. . . the way light bounces off the water and rocks in a stream, the contrast of snow against the warm under brush, creating abstracted forms. . . it all sparks an emotional chord.

The environment stimulates your senses as you breath the fresh air taking in all the sights and sounds; a truly awe inspiring and humbling experience. These paintings are my personal response to these surroundings both on location and from my studio.

SEMI ABSTRACT WORK

I love painting my ‘semi- abstract forest’ series. Creating these works are always an exploration, as I never quite know what the outcome will be. The freedom from not having to do an exact representation allows for greater creative expression; making the process that is much more satisfying.

Biography

I have always been fascinated with the visual arts. Drawings, paintings, movies. I’m sure that led me to a serious study of art beginning with private art lessons while I was in middle school. These lessons of charcoal drawing, pastels and oil painting gave me a good foundation. High school art was three years of graphic design which carried over to college. I majored in graphic design at the University of Tulsa, earned my BFA and began working at a design studio. As much as I liked graphic design, there was something appealing about illustration. I would often include an illustration in my design work. But I had a dream to someday illustrate posters or have my paintings in magazines like all of the illustrators I admired in the ‘60’s and ‘70’s.

After working several years in the graphic design field I got the opportunity in 1979 to attend the Illustrators Workshop. A three week workshop whose faculty included most of the illustrator’s whose work I so admired. It was here that I was introduced to the works of the Golden Age illustrators and visited the studios of two of the Workshop faculty, Bernie Fuchs and Bob Peak. With encouragement from Bernie Fuchs and Alan E. Cober I began my freelance illustration career. From 1981 until 2018 my clients were editorial, corporate, over thirty children’s picture books and advertising. Much of my illustration work is in the collections of national and international corporations, private collectors, and museums. I was fortunate to receive numerous awards and recognitions through the years as an illustrator.

In 2018 I retired from illustration and returned to studio and plein air painting. After being an illustrator for over forty years and working on so many different assignments I like painting a variety of subjects. But being born and raised in Oklahoma and familiar with the Native American culture, I especially enjoy making art with Native American themes.

I am an Associate Member of OPA, an Associate Member of NOAPS and a Signature Member of the International Society of Acrylic Painters. To add to my experience and growth as an artist I studied plein air with Bill Cramer at Grand Canyon in 2018 and with Charlie Hunter in the Texas Hill Country in 2022.

I live with my wife, Leslie, in our 1912 farm house in McKinney, Texas.

Karen Scharer’s work reflects decades of art study with a wide range of artists, informed by a diverse mix of experiences from travel, a degree in forestry, and a 17-year career in technology. During her nearly 40-year successful painting practice, Scharer’s work has transitioned from realism to abstraction, and from watercolor to acrylic to oil, a medium which has completely captured her focus and passion for the past 20 years. Karen Scharer is based in Pueblo West, CO where her home and studio sit beneath dramatic skies just minutes from the beautiful Arkansas River, and a short drive from some of Colorado’s most magnificent mountain peaks. Jeanine Donkers is a Dutch figurative artist. While having an interest in drawing as a child and exploring acrylic painting in her adolescent years, she went on to study social sciences. However, feeling this career wasn’t for her, she changed paths several times, searching for what she really wanted to do. Years later, after the birth of her children, she finally began making space for drawing and painting again. Jeanine grew to become a self-taught painter, working exclusively with oils. The introspection that was needed to get her there is what influences her most artistically. Her paintings reflect her own inner world, with all its highs and lows. Through symbolism she often tells her story about universal thoughts and emotions. As such, her style can be described as narrative, or magical realism.

Barbara Noonan is an award-winning pastel artist who delights in interpreting nature’s light in her paintings. Using confident mark making in saturated pure pigment sticks, each stroke glides over the finely textured paper and brings life to her subject matter. Daily beach walks, painting en plein aire and years of photography inform her work - both representational or abstract.

When not on Camano Island, Barbara lives on Saint George Island, Florida, where she trades driftwood beaches and fir trees for sand and pines. She is a Signature Member of the Northwest Pastel Society and previously Pastel Society of the West Coast, the Camano Art Association, as well as a member of Women Painters of Washington.

This artist’s award-winning paintings are found in books, magazines and galleries in Washington and Florida. Her work has been collected internationally and is included in Seattle’s Virginia Mason Hospital as well as in the Kent City Art Collection. James Giaccio is an interpretative representational painter. Mostly self-taught, his visual style has been developed through practice and dedication. He works in a variety of media across a range of subject matter, with a sustained interest in the natural world guiding his art.

After careful consideration of subject and composition, Mr. Giaccio selects a medium that can best support his vision. Preferring watercolor for still life, floral and figurative work, he applies fine detail, charged areas of saturated color, and generous glazing - all supported by heavyweight Arches paper - to lend depth and vibrancy to the image. In the process he moves the work somewhat away from the lightness and transparency often associated with watercolor.

Mr. Giaccio’s approach to landscape painting moves in a different direction. Here, with his focus removed from the close at hand and directed toward the expanse and variable light of land, sea and sky, he seeks a less detailed, more tonalistic depiction of the subject. The atmospheric and abstract aspects of the genre are indulged, and to this end he finds oil, painted on linen panel, and pastel, drafted on sanded paper, the more effective means.

Born and raised in Jersey City, New Jersey, Mr. Giaccio displayed an interest in fine art and a talent for drawing and painting from an early age. After receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree from New York University, he attended Parsons School of Design in Manhattan to study commercial art. He enjoyed early success as an illustrator, with portraiture and editorial illustrations appearing in various publications. His portraits were often purchased by their subjects after publication.

Over time Mr. Giaccio came to find illustration unfulfilling, so he chose to put his art career on hold. He then joined a family business outside the arts, attendant to the needs of raising a family of his own. However, his interest in fine art and desire to paint never subsided, and in recent years he returned to his easel in earnest.

James Giaccio lives with his wife Carolyn in Summit, New Jersey, and dedicates most days now to painting in the comfort of his home studio. He is represented by Galaray House in Lexington, Massachusetts, and the Geary Gallery in Darien, Connecticut.

Biography

Emmanuelle Fonsny was born in Belgium but moved to Sydney, Australia, at age 13. Growing up, she loved spending time on her own creating tiny objects out of clay for her doll house or drawing cats and faces in graphite. Although she has worked in music and languages, art has always been present in her life.

In her 30s, Emmanuelle started exploring other mediums by attending various classes and workshops. She also started learning figure drawing to loosen up her style.

She tried acrylic and oil but what truly resonated with her was pastels after seeing a pastel exhibition at the Musée d’Orsay in Paris in 2023! Since then, she has been learning everything she can about this medium.

Kyle Vincent Thomas is a contemporary realist who excels in painting still-lifes, landscapes, and the figure. His works hang in private collections across America and internationally in Ireland, Scotland, and France. Though he didn’t start painting until his early 20’s, Kyle has had a deep interest in art from an early age. As a young boy, he loved to draw. Through books and museum visits, he developed a great love for realist art, especially the works of Michelangelo and Rembrandt. However, serious study in art didn’t start for him until 1997 when he enrolled at Laguna College of Art and Design. It was there that he trained to draw and paint in the classical tradition. While studying at LCAD, Kyle discovered and became greatly influenced by the 19th century artists John Singer Sargent and Joaquin Sorolla. He continues to look to their work for guidance and encouragement. Kyle graduated in 2000 with a BFA in Painting. He later went on to receive his MFA in Figurative Painting from the Academy of Art University in 2009.

Kyle currently lives in Chandler, Arizona with his wife and three children.

Biography

Mathew Nagendran (b.1991) is a Canadian representational oil painter originally from Toronto, ON, who now maintains a studio practice in Katarokwi/Kingston, ON.

Entirely self-taught, Mathew has taken an unconventional path in developing his artistic practice, evolving from an illustrative approach to the classical realism he embraces today. Mathew’s body of work focuses on the complexity of human expression, exploring both physicality and emotion to highlight the triumphs and challenges of being fully human. Inspired by Pre-Raphaelite, Baroque, and 19th-century Impressionist painters, his work strives to balance traditional techniques with contemporary aesthetics.

Notably, Mathew’s work has been featured in Free Lit Magazine, and he has exhibited with Modern Fuel Artist-Run Centre, Art Noise Gallery, Window Art Gallery Kingston, and The Union Gallery.

Biography

Teresa Lynn Johnson, an artist based in New Mexico, has been refining her oil painting expertise for many years, with a focus on western landscapes and both wild and domestic animals. Teresa was born in Coleman, Texas, and spent her formative years living on a secluded four-hundred-acre farm, where she engaged with animals and explored nature daily. This environment fostered her love for wildlife and natural settings.

Her inherent creativity led Teresa into the realm of art after initially pursuing a career as a software analyst for a global company and raising a family. She discovered her passion for oil painting early on and committed to studying through workshops with renowned artists, books, college classes, and self-study.

In 2012, Teresa commenced her professional art journey, being selected as one of twelve artists nationwide for a year-long mentorship under the guidance of noted artist Kevin Macpherson. Since then, she has shown her work in numerous exhibitions and juried shows across New Mexico, Colorado, Texas, Nevada, Utah and California, earning accolades such as best in show and top placements. Her collectors span the United States, and she has been featured in various art publications, including Southwest Art Magazine and Western Art Collector Magazine.

Teresa is currently affiliated with several prestigious organizations: American Women Artists (AWA), American Artist Professional League (AAPL), Women Artists of the West – (WAOW, Associate), and Oil Painters of America (OPA). She holds a Fine Art Certification from Sessions Professional School of Design and imparts her expertise as an instructor at The Art Connection in Aztec, New Mexico. Teresa continues to challenge herself through plein air studies and studio work.

Artist Statement

Nature or any light-filled subject fills me with inspiration and captures my imagination for a visual story. My preferred medium for creating these visual stories is oil paint, due to its rich color palette and the ability to develop texture.

When an idea begins to take shape, I typically explore it with a sketchpad, a camera, or plein air studies to create references for further development. Subsequently, I proceed by creating a tonal under-painting followed by painting with my selected color palette. Utilizing larger brushes and palette knives, I initially block in the extensive abstract areas. Gradually, I incorporate finer details with smaller brushes, meticulously ensuring that each brushstroke effectively conveys the intended narrative.

I love the challenge of painting diverse subjects, but primarily I paint animals and western landscapes. There is profound beauty in a flower that manages to bloom in an arid desert or in an elk peacefully grazing in a meadow. My desire is to capture, preserve and share this beauty that surrounds me.

FASO Collector Recommends: Diana Zawalick-Grenkow

Biography

Diana Zawalick-Grenkow is an artist who recently moved from Victoria B.C. to Grimsby, Ontario. At a young age Diana showed a talent for drawing and painting. She earned a Diploma of Applied Arts from Sheridan College for the Interpretive Illustration Program. It is her love for realism that had her decide to master still life and study classical painting in oil.

Her art is influenced through the study of Renaissance painters and modern day artists such as Noah Layne, Sara Lamb, Sadie Valerie, and Jeffrey Larson. Diana works primarily with oils on board portraying still life subject matter in a traditional style. She begins a painting by drawing on prepared board with thinned oil paint and a chisel brush, then building up layers of paint. The final layer is scumbling which allows colours to break through each other giving depth and luminosity to the painting.

Diana is an active volunteer and has held a number of positions in the arts community. She is currently a member of the Canadian Whiskey Painters, and is a member and Secretary for the Federation of Canadian Artists, Toronto Chapter. She is now settling into, and exploring, the art community in the Halton/Niagara Region. When living in the Greater Victoria B.C. area she was; Exhibition Convenor for the Federation of Canadian Artists Victoria Chapter, past treasurer and member Island Illustrators’ Society, and committee Member/Organizer 2017 West Shore Studio Tour.

Martin was born in South Carolina. He graduated from Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, Florida in 1981. He has worked as a professional artist since then. Martin’s ability to paint people and historic sites has led to 30 years of commissions with the National Park Service. Paintings of Native American life, The Underground Railroad, Civil War battles, The Battle of the Little Bighorn and many others are used by the NPS for educational purposes. His gallery paintings include the figure as well as southern landscapes, interiors, and still lifes. Martin lives in Newnan, GA.

Biography

Laurie grew up in South Africa before immigrating to New Zealand with her husband and four children over twenty years ago. She is an advocate of distance learning, having obtained a B.Compt degree from the University of South Africa followed by twenty-seven years of home educating her children. A move to the very remote Marlborough Sounds at the top of New Zealand’s South Island resulted in her enrolment with the Academy of Art University in San Francisco and her Master’s degree in Fine Art. Her fascination with place and people has resulted in an exploration of the age-old genre: The Tronie (face or head). She continues to develop her visual language through oil paint on aluminium to present her viewer with an intimate glimpse into the soul of her subjects.
