BoldBrush Recommends: André Vaillant

Biography
André Vaillant (b. Ottawa, 1987) is an internationally award winning, Canadian landscape painter currently based in Victoria, BC. As an avid hiker and backpacker, he spends much of his free time in exploring the vast and varied landscapes of Vancouver Island, which continue to have an immense impact on his work.
André is self-taught artist who is occasionally described stylistically as a modern post-impressionist due to his paintings often combining elements of impressionist techniques with a representational base. With a primary focus on form and colour, his works are often crafted through layers of precisely mixed, pure colors which work in tandem to create a wide range of atmospheric effects and lighting. He seeks to capture the beauty of the Canadian landscape through truthful representation and blends it with an emotional narrative of his experiences which often exhibits themes of isolation, solitude, and how the humbling scale of these vistas reminds us of our very small place in the natural world.
Often defying the conventional post-modernism thinking in the art world, his work strives simply for the expression of beauty. His belief that, "the job of an artist is to see the beauty in the world. Then through the creative act and the lens of our personal perception of it, share that beauty so that others may experience it through us." continues to be the core philosophy behind his work.
