Biography
Hello All!
I am delighted that you have taken the time to learn more about me and my work.
Let me introduce myself.
My name is Anne Gee. My sweet parents named me “ANN” but in fifth grade, my teacher introduced me to the book Anne of Green Gables I was enamored with the book and loved the main character’s quirky personality so much that I changed my name to Ann with an “E”.
I love nature, antiques, gardening, golfing and creating.
I am originally from the Midwest - Wisconsin, Michigan and Indiana where we lived 100 miles east of Chicago. My parents would bring my sisters and I to The Art Institute of Chicago which was a huge treat! Though we walked through the whole museum, we usually would head directly to the Impressionists. The Old Masters - Mary Cassatt , Paul Cezanne, Vincent Van Gogh, Claude Monet, Pierre-Augusta Renoir, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Berthe Mourisot, Edgar Degas, Johnny Singer Sargent, Edouard Manet and more - were so inspiring and I came away desperately wanting to paint something! I loved the looseness and essence that was portrayed. Monet, Cassatt and Toulouse-Lautrec were my favorites at the time.
After graduating from Purdue University with a degree in Interior Design, I moved to Colorado. There I met my husband, Tom, and we had two lovely daughters. I changed my focus from interior design to antiques. My parents raised us to appreciate antiques so for 30 years, I had either an antique booth or an antique shop and loved collecting and searching for treasures. I dabbled in watercolors for a while. At that time, it was my favorite medium. . .
I was originally introduced to pastels by meeting the artist, Dan Beck, whose impressionist style in portraits, landscapes, and still lifes captured my heart. It was love at first sight!
It is pure joy to paint with the medium of soft pastels - the color and instant gratification to create art portraying the essence, spontaneity and beauty. When I start a new day at the easel, I am filled with all the possibilities. I love the potential of color, line, shape, patina, expressive gestural drawing and texture coming together. My paintings are based on a photo, a combination of photos, painting from life and my mind’s imagination. I paint the things that I love and inspire me. My hope is that the viewer experiences an emotion that calls to them.
My husband and I now split time between Colorado and Arizona, so some of my influences come from the scenery of the foothills of Colorado and the desert of Arizona. I am fascinated by the constant changing light and beauty of both.
I have studied with many excellent instructors including Casey Klahn, Tony Allain, Lorenzo Chavez and Alain Picard.
And although I was never raised on a farm or owned a cow, I am absolutely drawn to painting them and find myself incredibly inspired by cow paintings. It may be because I was born in Wisconsin, known as the land of dairy.
“ Placid” . . .
People always use that word to describe cows. But they’re also joyful creatures. They run and play, and they love music. ~”Maureen Gibbon - Lost Notebook of Édouard Manet: A Novel
I am constantly taking drive-by photos of cows for my reference.
Ever evaluating and evolving my style,
I continue my journey.
