BoldBrush Recommends: Christina Szakonyi

Biography
Christina Szakonyi is a Florida-based artist specializing in animal sculpture that investigates the history and legacy of the animal. Drawing from both personal interactions with animals and admiration from afar, her work is driven by a search for the essence of the unexplainable something in an animal's presence. Szakonyi's animals seemingly rise from another place or time in sculptures that have been described as joyful, explosive and serene.
"I am sculpting the animal as if seeing it for the first time. Upward and outward the animal emerges into the studio. I'm always refining, in search of the divine thread that permeates each animal, something that feels both ancient and of the moment."
Christina Szakonyi holds an MFA from Florida State University and is an associate member of the National Sculpture Society. Recognized in Southwest Art's 21 Under 31 Young Artists to Watch in 2017, she has since received the BoldBrush award, a Finalist award in the Art Renewal Center International Salon, and most recently, the Laura Ziegler scholarship from the National Sculpture Society. Her work is collected and exhibited nationally.
