Biography
I’m Clover Honey, a Tennessee artist working primarily in oil painting. I’ve always been drawn to making things, and painting has become my way of slowing down and really looking at the world around me.
I paint everyday subjects because they are familiar and real. A house, a garden, a stretch of road, a person, or a simple arrangement of objects doesn’t need to be extraordinary to be worth painting. What interests me is what happens when I take the time to really look at it-to notice the shapes, colors, light, relationships, and details that are easy to overlook when we move through life too quickly.
I believe one of the most important skills an artist can develop is the ability to truly see. Painting is an exercise in paying attention. The longer I look, the more I find, and that process of looking is often as important to me as the finished painting.
My approach is intuitive and expressive. I enjoy visible brushwork, strong shapes, shifting color, and allowing the paint to remain visible rather than trying to make a painting look like a photograph. I want the process of looking to remain present in the finished work.
Although oil painting is my primary medium, my creative life extends into gardening, working with clay, sculpture, and teaching. Working in different mediums keeps me curious and continually changes the way I see.
I’m also passionate about building a creative community in Shelbyville, Tennessee. Through my work with the Bedford Arts Collective and my teaching, I enjoy helping other artists develop confidence, find their own voice, and spend more time simply making art.
For me, painting begins with looking. It’s about giving something my full attention and seeing it for what it actually is.
