Biography
It’s just somebody’s head, only a vase of flowers, a pile of rocks... Nothing has intrinsic value or beauty. Every sunset deceives the mind with its false display of glory. Meaning is simply a lie that’s pretty to believe in. Therefore, meaningful art, can not exist either. A painting is a composition that can carry no more worth than the sum of its empty parts.
These ideas lend weight to the lie that can plague an artist’s mind every time they sit down to paint. Nothing I can paint has value, so none of my paintings do either. Why bother?
For artist Daniel C. Norris, battling this doubt has been an essential step in finding the will to continue creating art. After meditating on these absurdist/nihilistic challenges for years, he has come to believe exactly the opposite. All of creation carries weight. Therefore every recreation carries weight as well. The world is God’s temple. Therefore, every person, place, and thing has been marked to perform a function of divine service. A human is made in the image of God. Thus, a portrait is an image of an imager of God. With this philosophy every study, no matter how seemingly mundane the subject, is an opportunity for him to consider both the value and the role it plays on the world’s divine stage. An illustration, is a chance for him to home in on a chapter of history or imagination, and to feel the weight that moment carries for good or evil. For Daniel, each painting is fundamentally a chance to learn and to grow spiritually.
Background:
Daniel C. Norris was born on June 16, 1995 in Encinitas, California where he he currently resides. He grew up in a home filled with impressionistic oil paintings fueling an interest in creating art early on in life. His mother’s meticulous seasonal and holiday decorating around the house was a major influence on his current love for painting the seasonal still life. He studied drawing and painting from life locally at Watts Atelier of the Arts for 5 years, supplementing his education with workshops out of state from Scottsdale Artists’ School. He works in a variety of mediums but specializes on working with oil paint in the styles of realism and impressionism. He paints all subjects as he continues to expand his artistic capabilities, especially portraits.
