Biography
Dee Esler is a practicing, full time veterinarian who currently works at a very challenging municipal animal shelter. Before she started at the shelter she was in private practice for nearly 20 years, and ran her own dog rescue organization for most of those years. Her heart has always been in rescue and rehabilitation of unwanted animals, so the move to the shelter was a logical one. Before becoming the first staff veterinarian for her shelter, Dee volunteered time weekly caring for the animals there. Dee is also a lover of all things in nature, having been raised in an active outdoors family. Before beginning her career in veterinary medicine, she worked in a wildlife and nature park and volunteered with a local wildlife rescue and rehabilitation group. During that time she raised many baby squirrels, possums, armadillos, raccoons, and birds. She also joined a local falconer's group and showed a red tailed hawk. She and the bird also gave shows and talks at the park and on local television.
Dee began studying art rather by accident in college when she took a drawing class to round out a busy schedule of science and math courses. In that class she discovered the joy of creating art and realized how relaxing it could be to create. She took several more classes during her college years and continued to draw after graduation and throughout her years in graduate school and veterinary school. Her work is almost all related to animals and nature in one way or another. Her favorite medium is pen and ink where she enjoys bringing out the small details of her subjects with short pen strokes or stippling. She does also sometimes work with pencil, colored pencil, watercolors, and has recently discovered digital drawing and photography. Nature photography has become Dee's latest creative endeavor. She finds that it combines many of her favorite things into one creative passion. She absolutely adores walking in the State Forest land that backs up on her property and always takes a camera with her! Walking in nature is one of her favorite ways to relax and she enjoys sharing her adventures through photographs. After taking the photos, Dee also enjoys the post processing aspect of photography since that is where her creative needs can be truly satisfied.
When not working in one way or another, Dee spends time with her small menagerie of pets which include dogs, cats, birds, turtles, and goats. She also enjoys working out and staying fit and tries to make time for some sort of activity each day. Dee lives on a small farm, What Next Farm, in the small, rural community of Williston in north central Florida. She has lived there for over 30 years and loves the rural lifestyle. If you would like to get in touch with Dee, you can reach her at dee.esler@whatnext10.com or at 352-215-1930. All questions are welcome!
