BoldBrush Recommends: Deborah Allison

Biography
"Art is powerful and the creation of art is a means of expressing and invoking power. As an artist, I am not always aware of how my work might affect a viewer. In fact, as I am painting, I can only be sure of my feelings and reactions toward my piece. It is my desire to create beautiful and evocative paintings that touch and inspire the viewers. I build a relationship with my models and fall in love with them as I am putting their faces on the canvas. Whether I am painting in a traditional realism style based on observation, or a more whimsical painterly fashion using an intuitive approach, it is my goal to portray the subject's soul beauty as well as their physical likeness. Once the painting is complete, the relationship between the viewer and the model is out of my hands." D. Allison
Though Allison is internationally known for her finely expressive portraiture, she balances her human portraits with "portraits" of spaces and landscapes, endowing each with a serene quality, evoking a sense that the viewer is part of the piece.
Inspired by the depth and dimension of art while living in Paris, Allison began her training with private art teachers, quickly turning to teaching on European painting holidays. These experiences have been rounded out by numerous painting and portrait workshops along with intensive study with Anthony Ryder at the Ryder Studio in Santa Fe. After living, creating, teaching and exhibiting for years in Texas, Allison has recently moved her studio back to Santa Fe to reconnect with her artistic families.
Allison has had work accepted into and displayed at national and regional juried shows with Women Artists of the West (WAOW), National Oil and Acrylic Painters Society (NOAPS), Oil Painters of America, Portrait Society of America - Texas, Pastel Society of the Southwest, American Artists Professional League, Hunting Art Prize as well as numerous group and solo shows.
These days, Allison displays her paintings at her working studio located in the Baca Arts District of the Santa Fe Railyard.
