FASO Collector Recommends: Debra Davis
Biography
Based in the heart of rural Alabama, nestled amidst the lush landscapes and charming architecture that inspire her paintings, is artist Debra Davis. Born at Fort Benning in Columbus. GA, Davis’ early life was shaped by the transient nature of her father’s naval career. Moving frequently and attending different schools each year, Davis cultivated a quiet personality.
The calling to be an artist didn’t echo until when she was in ninth grade. She surprised herself by falling in love with drawing - the thrill of creating something recognizable was exhilarating. Her artistic genes may have been inherited from her musician father and brother, for she discovered an innate talent despite not having formal art classes until later in life.
She balanced her craft with her personal life, getting married early and having a child, and with her professional commitments, which saw her serve 20 years in corporate America. Even as her life was filled with obligations, the dream of painting never faded. It continued as a hobby, with frequent purchases of art supplies in anticipation of having time to create.
When she finally found the space to engage with her art, Davis dove in with acrylics before transitioning to oils, drawn by their capacity to better express her feelings. Today, she continually seeks to better her craft by attending numerous art workshops. She studies other artists and their techniques, learning and adopting them, but always making sure to add her unique touch.
Her passion for capturing the beauty in everyday rural life radiates in her work. She is drawn to scenes that might seem less than perfect to the average eye but thrives on bringing the unexpected to life on her canvas. To achieve this, Davis fully immerses herself in her subject matter, using all her senses to understand it before picking up a brush. This approach, combined with her use of color and texture, has become her signature technique and sets her work apart.
Her labor of love has not gone unnoticed. Davis took first place at her very first show in Covington, Georgia. She later won Best in Show in another competition and also placed third at the Atlanta Artist Association.
However, Davis is not one to sit on laurels. She continues to find inspiration and challenge in rural America’s landscapes, lovingly translating barns, streams, trees, and forgotten vintage items onto her canvas. Her favorite projects often revolve around these subjects.
A notable influence on her work is John Pototschnik, a color master whose style evokes different moods across his different scenes. His work has helped Davis develop the visual language she uses to express the tranquility and peace she sees in the world around her. She also enjoys working with Amanda Lovett, who mentored with John, and frequently takes workshops with her to learn her techniques for realistic landscapes.
Davis is currently an active member of several art organizations, nationally with Oil Painters of America and National Oil and Acrylic Painters Society and regionally and locally including the Columbus Artist Guild, Auburn Arts Association, Opelika-Auburn Visual Voice, Visual Arts Association of LaGrange, and the Montgomery Arts Guild.
As she looks forward, Davis plans to continue honing her craft and sharing the alluring beauty of rural life. She believes in the critical role of art in society as a conduit of shared emotion and understanding. Davis wants her work to continue resonating with peaceful and calming feelings among those who view it. Her goal is to continue capturing the marvels of everyday life and expressing them in vibrant colors and textures on canvas. For Debra Davis, the journey is just as important as the destination, resulting in art that is as satisfying to create as it is to view.
