Biography
I am a painter/mixed media artist currently living and working as a full-time artist in Sheboygan, WI. I grew up in south central Nebraska and earned a BFA in Printmaking from the University of Nebraska - Lincoln. I earned an MFA in Painting from the Pennsylvania State University. Graduate school was followed by 31 years of teaching art on the college/university level in Pennsylvania, Kansas, Louisiana and Wisconsin.
I've tried on a lot of different artist hats throughout my career but one thing that has remained a constant is the importance of color in my work. Color tells the emotional story. Shapes and marks back that up. My current work has evolved into a type of surrealism through biomorphic shapes. The shapes arise from intuitive gestural drawing. I never have a plan - I trust my sense of color and composition to arrive at something new. The forms are suggestive of plants, animals or winged creatures as the images take shape. Spontaneity is key for my process.
My paintings and pastels have been exhibited in over one hundred solo, group, and competitive exhibitions across the United States as well as exhibitions in Tokyo, Botswana, Kenya, and Shanghai.
