Biography
Artist’s Statement
As a toddler, I already was carefully observing the world around me and drawing constantly, whether on paper or bedroom walls. Fortunately, my arts-loving parents were forgiving and encouraging. Throughout school years and into adulthood I explored many 2D and 3D mediums, but pen-and-inks and oils -- later replaced by acrylics -- resonated with me. They still do.
Rather than strict adherence to a signature style or subject matter, my creative impulse determines interpretation and medium.
With brush strokes resembling the lush texture of oils, my acrylic paintings are expressive representations. Observers describe them as realistic with a touch of Impressionism, but I think that each work speaks for itself. My goal is to embrace viewers’ feelings visually, and to start a conversation or a story that can be fueled by their imagination.
Pen and ink? Now, that’s a whole other story. Different medium, different approach; a way to celebrate my abiding love for the power and beauty of line. Within the realm usually of black on white, ideas and imagery emerge from lines liberated and flowing unfettered to interpret emotion, movement, and the ephemeral.
Occasionally the spirit moves me to blend the two, pen-and-ink and acrylic, into unique visual ideas compounded by the drama of color onto paper, paint board or canvas. How much more fun can that be!
In the studio I am in a cocoon of calm when touching paint to canvas or ink to paper, and hours float by on gossamer wings. My signature may mark a piece as finished, but it is the doing -- resolving creative challenges along the way -- that is most rewarding and which completes my personal journey. The hope, then, is that the viewer’s journey with it has only just begun.
