BoldBrush Recommends: Diane Hoeptner

Biography
Diane Hoeptner grew up in Austinburg, Ohio. She moved to Los Angeles in the mid 90’s to complete a BA in Studio Arts. She then enjoyed work as a digital artist for video games and film. When the daily painting movement became popular (around 2008) she began painting and blogging small paintings. Her floral themed paintings were published as posters and greeting cards by publishers such as Editions Limited, Current, American Greetings and Wild Apple Graphics.
When she started painting her beloved cats, her art took a new direction. Shelter cats became an ardent focus for the next several years. Diane’s cat paintings have been featured in books “Cats in Art” by Desmond Morris and “The Book of the Cat.” Other publications include Modern Cat Magazine, The Artist’s Magazine, Southwest Art and International Artist. New paintings and current goings-on can be found in her email newsletter, Hoeptner Happenings. She resides in Kirtland, Ohio with a husband and two rescue cats.
Artist Statement
Floral still life and cats are my favorite subjects to paint. I am dazzled by the variety of outcomes that can be achieved within still life painting. Visual components like opposites on the color wheel and passages of dark to light are easy springboards for my compositions. Flowers have an ethereal beauty that both reassure and revitalize one’s spirit.
I see ethereal beauty in cats too but they bring with them personality and movement. I discovered this when I started painting my own cats. They were perfect embodiments of sweetness and snark. . .enigmatic little beasts, the kind who never smile. Raising awareness for the plight of shelter cats adds another dimension of meaning for me. Cats comfort and provide excellent companionship. Given proper conditions, they are also hilarious.
Expressing that through painting is my honor. As long as flowers spring from the earth and cats play, I indulge. Life is good and I hope my paintings communicate that in a way the viewer can feel. -Diane Hoeptner, December | 2022
