FASO Collector Recommends: Donna Montgomery
Biography
Donna is a Canadian artist and instructor from the Greater Sudbury region of Northern Ontario. During the early 1980’s, Donna moved to BC, then returned in 1985 to settle with her family in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario. Today her home is located in Southern Ontario, just north of Toronto.
Throughout her life, art has been a passion. She began painting at first in oils, and then in her twenties, she took a weekend watercolour workshop with Graham Scholes, and everything changed. The unpredictability and challenge of watercolour captivated her interest and desire to explore the medium. During the 1970’s, Donna began teaching elementary school, and earned her B.A. and B. Ed, including a Visual Arts Specialist along the way. Family and career were foremost for many years, and it wasn’t until a 2004 workshop with artist Helga Flower that her desire to return to the art world was rekindled. Donna entered local art shows and juried art exhibitions.
Her paintings won several awards over the years, and many of her paintings are displayed in homes around the world. While living in Sault Ste Marie, Donna was an active member of the Algoma Art Society. She served as its president for two years, and was also a member of her home town art club in Onaping Falls. Donna is an active member of the Barrie Art Club where she participates in member shows as well as teaching a variety of workshops. Her work is displayed in the Coldwater Mill Gallery during the summer months and continues to enter local and regional juried shows.
NEW DIRECTIONS
Donna has pursued new creative challenges and techniques by taking workshops with many well-known and established artists throughout her career. The playful and creative nature of the variety of media used in these workshops has provided her with new and exciting challenges. Recently, creating unique, colourful non-objective artwork is now part of her creative direction. Her paintings have won awards in local art shows and juried exhibitions. She is currently an active member and workshop instructor with the Barrie Art Club.
