BoldBrush Recommends: Doug Simpson

Biography
From a young age, Doug dreamed of becoming a musician or artist. However, life's circumstances prevented him from pursuing this passion until later. He began a retail career at the age of twelve in a grocery store, and ended this phase of his life after managing a superstore.
At forty-six, Doug chose to complete his college education which he had paused at nineteen. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Art Education, but public school teaching didn't fulfill his passion for fine art. Instead, he embarked on a second career, directing the creative, printing, and IT departments of a regional newspaper.
While there he opened an art gallery, frame shop, and an online store for mixed media supplies. Situated in a downtown area alongside two other galleries it became his full time passion for ten years before he moved his gallery studio to his home. After a year of creating art there, he enrolled in the Milan Art Institute Mastery program for increased skills and fresh inspiration, which elevated his artistic expertise to new heights.
Doug paints and creates intuitively laying layer after layer on the canvas using acrylics, oils, and a variety of additives. Pallette knives and wedges are his tools of choice to lay down semi-controlled vibrant colors. He loves texture and may use paper, cloth, solid objects, rocks, or wood to create a three dimensional surface. His work is abstract, about the unknown and unseeable, and a response to the canvas as it progresses.
Doug says, "Being in my studio and creating new work for my gracious collectors is a joy unspeakable. Life is good!"
Along with his beautiful work, Doug's path to creating art is a story so many of us can relate to - pursuing the "practical" route of reliable income as you build an art career. Bravo!
