Biography
If you’ve heard of me, then you probably recognize me as that artist who primarily paints western landscapes and cute cows.
It’s true, I do paint both those. I haven’t always painted anything at all. There were some long, dark years before I got here.
It’s a very long (twenty minute read) story and I have to warn you, it gets a little frightening at times.
If you’d like to read that story you can do that here.
If that’s not your cup of tea, the short story is that I’ve lived in Wyoming for most of my adult life after moving here from New Hampshire at the age of twenty-five. I wanted to see what the West was like and have been doing that ever since.
It was after a very bad marriage (see long story) and subsequent undergraduate degree, that I began painting. That was over twenty-five years ago. In those years I’ve fallen deeper in love with the western landscape, Wyoming in particular, and sometimes the cows that live here.
Feeling at home is what kept me in Wyoming. It was the first place I’d been that I felt I could breathe deeply, find hope and solace for my soul. It’s no wonder I wanted to paint that feeling.
I find both the landscape and the cows to be inviting and welcoming. Any time I’m painting, whether outside or inside, there’s a conversation going on between me and the subject. Painting leads me to delightful communion with fellow creatures and creation .
They become my companions as I paint and it’s there that I find joy and peace, light and color. But it doesn’t stop there. That’s only half the glory of painting. . .
Have you ever experienced the unbridled glory of a beautiful sunset and realized how much more wonderful the experience is because you’re sharing it with someone else who feels it too? That’s the glory part of painting and what I hope to do with this gift of art in sharing with you.
A Few Details
Over the years I’ve studied with different artists in order to better my paintings. These artists include my first mentor, Sam Thiewes, who taught me a lot about color. Camille Przedwodek at the Scottsdale Artists School, also taught me about the color of light. Recently I’ve been studying with Scott Christensen, who is still teaching me much about painting in general, and landscape painting in particular.
My work can be seen at Cassens Fine Art in Hamilton, Montana, Deselms Fine Art in Cheyenne, and the Brinton Museum Store in Big Horn, Wyoming. I’m very proud to partner with all of them.
I’ve recently become a Signature Member of the American Impressionist Society. It’s an achievement I’m grateful for.
I love being a student and this year I’ll begin mentoring others, something I’m very excited about.
