FASO Collector Recommends: James Andrews

Biography
Born in 1969, James spent his early years on a cattle ranch in rural Idaho, which began his love for nature and the outdoors. After high school, James embarked on a rodeo career, but those dreams were dashed due to injury.
Although his mother was an oil painter, art was not on his radar until his late 40s. Having seen James’s creativity in wood and stonework, a friend encouraged him to try his hand at drawing, and he’s not looked back.
As a self-educating artist, James paints and draws a variety of subjects in a representational style. His early development on the ranch inspires much of what he paints. He has a deep appreciation for the American cowboy and the history of the West. When asked, James says, “I paint what would appeal to me were I looking to purchase a painting.”
James’s work has been featured in Western Art Collector, American Art Collector, Art of the West, and Treasure State Lifestyles magazines. He is a member of Oil Painters of America and the International Guild of Realism. His work has been exhibited in the International Guild of Realism salon, The Oldfield in Washington, Hold Your Horses at the Phippen Museum in Prescott, Arizona, where his work won the People’s Choice Award 2025, as well as Footprints on the Trail and Best of the West art shows during Western Art Week in Great Falls, Montana. His work will also be exhibited in 2026 at the Miniature Masterpiece show at the Phippen Museum in Prescott, Arizona. He will be the featured artist at the Hold Your Horses show at the Phippen Museum in 2026.
Few people doing what they love today can say that if they were never paid again, they would continue to do it. James would and feels blessed to be able to do what he does.
ARTIST STATEMENT
I call myself a self-educating artist because I’m continually striving to learn and get better with every painting I do. Hundreds of hours are and have been spent studying the old master’s techniques, drawing methods, composition, color theory, principles of visual reality, the nature of light, and much more. I spend many hours researching the subjects I paint, travel to specific locations to photograph models, and various scenery in the development of each painting. I have a deep appreciation for the history of the American West and want to tell these stories for others to enjoy.
