BoldBrush Recommends: Jane Foley Ferraro

Biography
ABOUT THE ARTIST: Jane grew up in Michigan where her journey of artmaking began at the age of eighteen with her first camera. She found joy in looking through the viewfinder, composing a world, then seeing that world come to life in the darkroom. Photography led her into exploring other media including collage, monoprinting, manipulated Polaroid photography and painting, which has become her primary focus.
Jane has exhibited her award-winning work in regional and national juried exhibitions since 1994 and is in private, corporate and university collections. While maintaining a psychotherapy practice, Jane continued to create her own art and encouraged her clients to use art as a means of self-expression. Currently, Jane paints daily in her home studios located in East Aurora, NY and Naples, FL and is represented by Meibohm Fine Arts, East Aurora, NY and Fine Line Designs Gallery, Ephraim (Door County), WI.
ARTIST STATEMENT: My passion in painting is finding emotion and mood in semi abstracted landscapes or seascapes through the sensitive use of color and texture. I work in oil paint mixed with cold wax medium and also with acrylics. Focusing on an ever-changing horizon line has become an intuitive departure point in my work which hovers between realism and abstraction. I describe my style as intuitive expressionism. My paintings are inspired by nature but emerge from memories and imagination, rather than specific references, in hopes of creating atmospheric images open to interpretation. I have no fixed idea in mind when I begin a painting. My process is one of call and response as each mark and color build to more as the work progresses and I discover where the painting is taking me. My influences include, but certainly are not limited to, Monet, O'Keeffe, Turner, Inness, Rothko, Helen Frankenthaler, Joan Eardley and Jane Wilson. The following quote by Seth Godin echoes my hopes and desires around my own need to create: "Art is a personal gift that changes the recipient. The medium doesn't matter. The intent does. Art is a personal act of courage, something one human does that creates change in another."
