Biography
From South Dakota to Norway and from Micronesia to the Republic of Georgia, photographer J.S. Dale has traveled the world capturing images through the lens of a camera. Jeff's broad range of life experiences created the foundation which developed his sense of vision and feeling for the world.
Born and raised in Rapid City, South Dakota, Jeff grew up in a strong Midwestern family. Leaving for the Navy in his early 20's, Jeff started his photographic journey by attending the Naval Photographic Intelligence course while based in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The artistic spark created at that time resulted in a lifetime of capturing dramatic images from his travels and experiences. Jeff also received invaluable experience as a photographer working in photo studios in both South Dakota and Michigan.
Jeff served his country for over 30 years in both the Navy and the Coast Guard. While based in San Diego, Jeff competed in rodeos representing a ranch on the Southern California Circuit. Jeff also boxed, winning his weight class in a series of boxing tournaments while assigned to the Third Fleet. His military assignments and life travels have taken him far and wide: countries visited now stands at 36. His job specialty was in maritime navigation, where he learned not only modern forms of navigation, but also the ancient forms of navigating using celestial references, pilotage, and reading the seas. He learned the art of Search and Rescue completing his part in the saving of many mariner's lives in peril on the waters.
All these experiences and many more developed within Jeff a keen sense of viewing the world and its environs. Jeff's images reflect his ability to observe a scene and capture the moment for eternity. Jeff has been recognized in many different photography competitions, including winning several categories in the annual All-Army Photography Contest, winning or placing high in competitions in San Diego, Detroit, and Northern Michigan, and in online contests. His images have graced the covers and pages of books, calendars, and magazines.
Photography remains, even in today's modern time of cell phone cameras, selfies, and non-stop imagery, the balance of light to capture a moment in time. Jeff thoughtfully approaches photography in this sense looking deeply into a scene in order to capture its nuances, drama, and beauty.
