BoldBrush Recommends: Jennifer Bilyk

Biography
"It's not what you look at that matters, it's what you see" - Henry David Thoreau
Hello. My name is Jennifer Bilyk and I am a self-taught artist living with my husband in the beautiful Okanagan Valley in southern British Columbia, Canada. Although I am relatively new to painting as an art form, creative art has consistently played a role in my life for as long as I can remember. Once I picked up a paintbrush I have never looked back!
So began my journey into painting seriously in 2015 and, as the quote by Henry David Thoreau suggests, when I see something that stirs my emotions in some way I know I just have to paint it. I am particularly drawn to water and so people enjoying the immense pleasure of relaxing in or by the water often figures in my work. My "Those Things We Do" series presents people in different situations where they find a moment of escape from the everyday. Whether it be a day at the beach, a cup of hot coffee on a rainy day, the wind in your hair while riding a bike or reading a good book. The vast variety and colors of flowers also play a role in my work. The abundance of flora and fauna in the valley where I live offers much inspiration.
That being said, my style is "conceptual realism" and I lean towards the use of intense color in an up close manner with clean edges.
Acrylics and gouache are my mediums of choice.
My hope is that my artwork will inspire you too, to "see" beyond the obvious and stir your emotions for years to come!
* p.s... To receive news of some of my artwork and new collections and maybe even a fun story or two about what I may be up to, sign up to my newsletter.
I was thrilled to get the award for outstanding acrylic painting last month! This feature is icing on the cake!
As a writer and an artist, I appreciate your writing and love the website.
