BoldBrush Recommends: Jessica Britton

Biography
Jessica Britton is a British oil painter whose creative process uses portraiture as a vehicle of self exploration. Traditional and unconventional painting methods convey the artists need for connection and logic.
‘The power of construction liberated me but the need for spontaneity fulfills me. The viseral Feeling of slick wet paint sliding across the canvas teamed with chromatic colour is my freedom.’
Art has been her sanctuary since growing up on a council estate in Portsmouth. From humble beginnings, drawing images from placemats and books onto stacks of computer paper -to enrolling into a BA for fine art at the Northbook College Sussex. It was her passion to teach the power of the arts to children and so she further enrolled to a PGCE at the University of Reading for Secondary Art Education. As a teacher for over 12 years the pandemic in 2019 provided a unique opportunity for Jessica to look inward and develop. She decided to persue Portraiture and oils which she had never done before then stumbled across the artist Arthur Gain streaming his process on twitch. Absolutely captivated by his approach and sparked with creative curiosity Jessica began to practice and became Arthur’s online student.
Painting from life when restrictions lifted became part of the normal practice and through searching for opportunities to paint from the model, Jessica began to paint with Ruth Fitton at her studio in Leeds. Upon Ruth moving to London, Jessica continued to run her own sessions from the model.
