BoldBrush Recommends: John Sanchez

Biography
John Sanchez was born in Passaic, New Jersey and raised in North Bergen, a gritty, blue-collar town in Hudson County. That environment-working-class, real, and unpolished-continues to shape the way he sees the world and the work he creates. His paintings are meditations on the ordinary: a quiet street at dusk, a cluttered room, the flicker of life in forgotten places.
Blending traditional painting techniques with contemporary subject matter, Sanchez creates moments that feel deeply lived-in-moments that ask to be looked at slowly and felt fully. His work is grounded in observation, but also in memory, atmosphere, and emotional truth.
John received his foundational training at the prestigious Art Students League of New York. He earned his BFA from Miami International University of Art & Design and his MFA from Florida International University.
His work has caught the attention of collectors including Debra and Dennis Scholl, Bill Bilowit and Grela Orihuela, Tom and Trish Kennedy, Carl Icahn and Barry Sternlicht. He is also in the permanent collection of the Perez Art Museum in Miami, the Frost Art Museum at FIU and recently inducted into the American Museum of the Cuban Diaspora. He has an international following as well. He lives and works in South Florida.
Somehow even though there are so many features that differ, especially the use of light on water, still looking at this I think of Hopper. Am I crazy?
