Biography
I grew up in Ohio and after living in California and Colorado I now reside in Bend Oregon. My mother was a prolific and highly acclaimed artist, but I did not begin to create art until late in life. There's late bloomers and there's me, almost never bloomed! I had an itch to paint, but I always pushed it to the future. Finally (and fortunately), realizing that I don't know how much future I may have, I dived in.
I paint mainly from my own reference photos. I am constantly capturing images on my cell phone that I think might have painting potential, i.e., interesting subject matter with good composition. Landscapes, urban scenes, odds and ends of still life. Early on as an artist, I set out to paint impressionistic landscapes. But in day to day painting, I am constantly lured to paint ordinary objects. I'd much rather make the mundane appear interesting through art, than to try to replicate a spectacular sunset.
Pastel on paper is the medium that gives me the most satisfaction. The colors and pigments are amazing. A mark made with pastel is so tactile, so immediate. There is no mixing, no waiting for it to dry. You lay down a stroke and that is that!
In my paintings I want to create an experience in which the viewer discovers clues to tell the story, or finds not so obvious 'easter eggs' that keep their eyes on a journey through the painting. I feel it is important to also leave things out and to let the viewer's mind connect the dots. To me, that makes art so much more personal than a photograph.
Painting to me is about expressing through color and shape my version of the object or scene. It may start with a photograph but that is just a suggestion for what might follow on the paper. It should be interesting and beautiful, yes, but I also hope to create an emotional connection with the viewer. That is the ultimate goal and when successful, the ultimate reward.
