Biography
It's all about the exploration, execution, and evolution of an idea. I find it to be quite calming to be "in the zone" loosely applying media and allowing a work to develop seemingly on its own. It turns out fans and collectors have found the works to be "joyful" and "calming," as well.
My work blurs the distinctions between alcohol ink, acrylic pouring and watercolor; working with dyes, inks, liquid acrylic, liquid watercolor, and other aqueous media - mixed or used individually. The resulting work has both dynamic and passive qualities. Amazing things happen when media are allowed to mix of their own volition. Even with minimum input, just the three primary colors, infinite possibilities come to light. Basic and simple leads to the kinetic and complex.
Lately, my work has been enhanced by the addition of metallic watercolor and pearlescent inks. In addition to my favorite surface to work on, Yupo synthetic paper, I use canvas, Yasutomo Mineral Paper, and various weights of watercolor papers. 2022 saw the exploration of Dura-Bright Black and the move to larger formats. 2023 promises to be another year of exploration, further developing the weave and montage motifs, and trials with negative painting. While the bulk of my work is abstract, I have done some occasional representational works to 'cleanse the palette.'
I serve on the Board of Trustees for the Professional Association of Visual Artists (PAVA), based in Dunedin, FL - sponsor of the annual Cool Art Show, which enjoys its 34th anniversary in 2023. I am also a member of St. Petersburg-based Warehouse Arts District Association (WADA), Tampa Regional Artists (TRA) and The Exhibiting Society of Artists (TESA).
In October 2022, I was blessed to be a chosen as both a Gobioff Foundation Microgrant Recipient and a Hillsborough Arts Council Professional Development Grant Recipient. During November and December 2022, I presented my first solo exhibit, "Non-linear," in the Corridor Gallery at the Carrollwood Cultural Center in Tampa, FL.
In March 2023, I became an Artsy Shark Featured Artist when they published the profile at this link: https://www.artsyshark.com/2023/03/27/featured-artist-mark-lembo/ . I have also had profiles published on CanvasRebel.com and VoyageTampa.com.
