Biography
Martin Matisoff is a fine art embroiderer and art quilter. His work is based on fairy tales, folklore, legend, mysticism, mythology, and occultism. His draws inspiration from Dutch, French, and Russian impressionism, abstract and German expressionism, sumi-e, and other styles of art. including prose and poetry. He is currently working on a series of art quilts that are based on John Milton's Paradise Lost, Dante Alighieri's Inferno, and William Butler Yeats poem, The Second Coming. Matisoff also draws on his knowledge of biblical mythology and mystical occultism, i.e., the Lesser Key of Solomon (Lemegeton), Book One, Ars Goetia. In addition, many of his embroidered works are abstract interpretations of historical events and inhumanity.
Matisoff was born in Hollywood, California. He spent numerous hours at Los Angeles's world class art museums including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Norton Simon Museum, Huntington Library, Art Museum & Botanical Gardens, and the Southwest Museum of the American Indian, and the Los Angeles Craft and Folk Art Museum.
Matisoff's embroidered artwork are in response to his emotions, inner experiences, and spiritual themes rather than realistic depictions. He uses various embroidery techniques in his work including surface embroidery, tambour beading, and crewel embroidery. Matisoff often uses machine embroidery to embellish his embroidered works. He uses numerous stitch types to complete each piece including chain stitch, split stitch, Peking knots, fly stitch, and Bokhara couching. He also use different thread materials to complete each art work including DMC 100% cotton floss, filament and spun silk, polyester, rayon, and viscose.
Matisoff studied privately with Chinese master painter Zhou Shuqiao and Sumi-e master Jan Zaremba. He recently studied tambour beading and embroidery with master tambour embroiderer Robert Haven.
Matisoff is a juried member of the Kentucky Crafted Program, a juried member of the Kentucky Artisan Center, an artist member of the Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA), and a member of the Embroidery Guild of America (EGA). His embroidery can be found in private and public collections. Matisoff holds a Bachelor of Arts from Western Illinois University and a Master of Science from University of Nebraska, Lincoln.
