Biography
To paint a moment of time as it passes is to synthesize all my senses into responding. It is why I paint. The challenge of doing this feels a bit like standing in a windstorm, so strong is the input sometimes. It is my hope that the viewer can read the energy, pressure and speed of a single brushstroke and as well as the overall idea. I begin with an understanding, a relationship with my subject matter. A painting may be about the time of day, the temperature of the air, the age of a thing or the story it tells, the relationships between shapes, light and shadow, the scent of the rocks, water sounds, nature's colors.
As a professional artist and illustrator first in Norway but mostly in the USA, I have had the opportunity to be a full time working artist my entire life. The business of art is different from making art, but artistic skill building is a constant. All the while, the experience of painting has been my teacher, my friend and constant source of awe.
