BoldBrush Recommends: Patrick Faile

Biography
Patrick was raised in rural farming community outside Rock Hill, SC, His involvement in art began at an early age as his mother's way of keeping him safe from dangerous farming operations and equipment, The rural fam life is where he developed a deep connection to nature and wildlife. His interest in art spans more than 60 years. Being mostly self-taught, his only formal education in the arts was through the public school system in jr. high and high school. After graduating from public school, his entry into engineering school gave him a new appreciation for graphic arts and his drafting skills flourished. He became very skilled in the use of graphite and pen & ink in the preparation of architectural and mechanical drawings and illustrations work that graduated to fine art.
Patrick served in the United States Air Force and had the opportunity to travel extensively as a young man. His love of the wildlife and grand outdoor spaces lead him to the National Parks of the United States and Canada. Much of his early watercolor painting was done with a backpack and a travel set of watercolors on a motorcycle. He states there may still be some early paintings of his hanging in Air Force hangers around around our military bases. National Park landscapes and their inhabitants are of primary inspiration in his body of work and continues to this day. Patrick was selected as Artist-in-residence at Shenandoah National Park and worked with the Shenandoah National Park Trust to do a roof top exhibition for the trust major donors He donated two peregrine falcon paintings completed in dedication to the reintroduction of the falcons to the Shenandoah Park. He continues seeking opportunities to work as an artist-in-residence at our National Parks.
Patrick has lived in Texas, South Dakota and Ohio before returning home to South Carolina in 2004. His landscapes reflect his travels in the Canadian Rocky Mountains to the desert Southwest. His wildlife and seascapes reflect his life-long ties to the Carolina coast closer to home. Patrick followed a natural career progression in fine arts to include a mastery of a multitude of different mediums before finding watercolor to be his favorite and most challenging medium. He states, "Creating art from nothing is as close as we will ever come to God and I am fortunate to have had two loving and nurturing parents that were supportive of my art career. During my artistic journey I have found that watercolor is the most demanding medium. It's as though watercolor has a life of its own. As artist, we can only guide and direct it through our experience and skill, but watercolor can sometimes surprise the artist in its effect. I always feel I am continuing to grow as an artist in an effort to master the watercolor medium."
Patrick refuses to be tied to any specific subject matter or genre of art. He does prefers painting landscapes, seascapes and wildlife. His love for the outdoors and our National Parks has been the source of inspiration throughout his life. He states, "I paint what appeals to me, and what I think will be memorable and time tested art. I always ask myself, will this painting and subject be worthy to hang in someone's home or business before I start each painting. I have hopes that the public will like it, perhaps even purchase it, but marketability is not always my primary motivating factor in producing art." His works are very realistic in nature and are very detailed. No doubt, the fine details of his works reflect his exceptional drafting skills, engineering background, and his command of the medium. His primary focus will remain in watercolor and pen & ink mediums in the future.
In recent years he has been accepted into and exhibited in 73 national and international juried exhibitions, as well as, solo exhibitions. He is a signature member of 5 watercolor societies and he continues to enjoy steady sales and commissioned works. Patrick has juried exhibitions, taught workshops, been published and continues to engage with his community and the public in general.
