Biography
I do landscape based work inspired by the area where I live, on the Blue Hill peninsula, Maine. I particularly am fascinated with the inter tidal zone where so much activity takes place. I paint on the scene and also work in my studio from memory, imagination, sketches and photos. To me, the creative spirit, inspiration, spontaneity, discovery, risk taking, the search for original expression, gestures, give and take, appreciation for the qualities of paint like fluidity and color subtleties all contribute to my work. I try to be as honest with myself in responding to any idea as I can. In 'pleine aire' painting I try to be straight-forward and keep things fresh and without preconceptions. Back in the studio I try to do the same but with more time and control over conditions I can push my images and thoughts and explore ideas suggested from the original observation. I love the elements or building blocks of image making, like color, line, shape, composition, texture and so forth. Sometimes I use strong abstract elements in my work even if the overall effect may be realistic. I get excited by paint flowing on a wet surface, color contrasts, soft paint forms contrasting with more structured ideas. The long winter here gives me more time to concentrate on artistic ideas. I like to work in series or take a subject and work it from several angles, times of day or with different atmosphere or formal emphasis. In some of my studio work I imagine images, improvise and work from an intuitive base. These paintings usually take on a theme as one idea begets another, always without preconception of what will turn out.
