FASO Collector Recommends: Pearl Horng

Biography
b. 1988, Taipei, Taiwan
Pearl is an award-winning artist living and working just outside of Richmond, Virginia. She creates paintings that are sensitive and expressive, and characterized by a deliberate balance between rendering and abstraction. What moves her through a piece is a belief that a painting should originate from a strong intention, and that a love and appreciation for the subject matter -- as well as disciplined decision-making through the process -- carry this effort forward.
Pearl began working in oils while she was studying medicine, driven to pursue her dream as a child that she could no longer set aside. She knew at a young age that art was her calling and that she would always circle back to it and find it again. She began working in oils at the age of 25 while she was studying medicine and has accumulated over a decade of experience in fine art. Today, she continues to balance her life as a professional artist and emergency physician.
Pearl believes that painting from life is key to developing thoughtful intuition as an artist. Her plein air work informs her efforts in the studio. She is particularly drawn to scenes with a strong sense of light and seeks to create a sense of energy and unity in her paintings. At the present moment, she is most fascinated by the behavior of water. Over the years she has studied with nationally and internationally recognized impressionist painters, and her work has been most strongly influenced by Robin Caspari and Hsin-Yao Tseng. She continues to learn and evolve as a painter by experimenting with paint, tools, and subject matter, spending time in the field, and drawing inspiration from her fellow artists and their respective journeys.
Her work has been accepted into American Impressionist Society and Oil Painters of America exhibitions, and received national recognition through Modern Impressionist Magazine, Plein Air Magazine, and BoldBrush. She has painted at numerous juried plein air events along the east coast and collected accolades along the way. Her work can be viewed at Crossroads Art Center in Richmond, Virginia.
