Biography
Creating has always been a central part of who I am.
One of my earliest fond memories was sitting in my great-grandmother's kitchen and eagerly finishing page after page in the paint-with-water books she always kept around for me. Throughout the rest of my childhood, I could usually be found engaged in one creative pursuit or another. Drawing, painting, playing piano, crochet, knitting, latch hook, sand art, sculpture, woodworking, embroidery, etc. My brain is always buzzing with ideas and my fingers are always itching to create something!
Before the age of two, I declared that my favorite things were "doggies" and painting, and that really hasn't changed! Nothing in life (outside of my two children) brings me more joy, satisfaction, and a sense of intrinsic purpose than painting. I'm obsessed with color and light and watching a representation of life grow onto the canvas with each brushstroke. It's completely addicting!
My style can be described as "realism" or "representational", but this is not to be confused with "photorealism" or "hyper-realism". I don't work in layers, I avoid excessive details (such as individual hairs/fur), and am never trying to create a painting that looks exactly like a photo.
My primary goal is simplifying what I see into shapes of value color to establish 3-dimensional form and a believable sense of light and life. The best way to describe how I paint is "Selective Start Alla-Prima", where I do everything in one layer, one brushstroke and color at a time, laying down wet paint next to wet paint and moving out from a singular starting point. A piece may take anywhere from 1 day to multiple weeks, depending on size and complexity. When you take a few steps back and view it from an appropriate distance, my work appears quite lifelike and detailed, but upon closer inspection, it is just shapes and values, carefully orchestrated and woven together. Realism through abstraction.
I have explored a variety of subject matter over the years, but am undeniably drawn towards animals as my primary muse. I love capturing their individual characteristics, personalities, and the raw emotion in each moment. I am usually listening to music while I paint and often feel connections between the emotions in the lyrics and the emotions of what I'm painting. Subsequently, I will frequently choose a song title or lyrical phrase as the title of the piece to help communicate that connection. Being an artist is definitely my dream job, and experiencing the joy it brings to others when they bring it into their own homes is a tremendous privilege and blessing. I can only hope my artwork enriches your life as much as it enriches mine!
