BoldBrush Recommends: Sarah Baskin

Biography
My name is Sarah Baskin. I am a watercolor and oil painter who lives part of the year in Sargentville, Maine, and the rest of the year in East Haddam, CT.
I left my career as a lawyer to focus on painting after recovering from breast cancer and losing both of my parents. I started my painting journey in watercolor, studying first in a weekly class with a watercolorist in Connecticut and eventually in a six-month intensive virtual atelier course with Dan Marshall, a watercolorist from Colorado, that took my work to the next level. Finally, I studied oil painting in workshops with Australian oil painter Colley Whisson, Rockport, MA artist Stapleton Kearns and California artist Tim Horn.
I paint impressionistic watercolor and oil landscapes, seascapes and figures, giving you the impression and atmosphere of a place, not a photorealistic rendering of that place. In each image I paint, I aspire to be a painter of light, focusing on how the sunlight plays across the side of a building, how it sparkles on the water and how shadows stretch across a landscape.
I love painting outside en plein air in challenging conditions of changing light, moisture, wind, heat and cold, and the occasional passerby, that force me to paint more quickly than I do in the studio and make me a better, looser painter. I even love to paint in plein air painting competitions. The competitive athlete in me loves the competitive nature of these events, even the timed quick draw competitions in which we have precisely 2 hours to complete a painting. In 2025, Sarah was juried into the 9th Annual Parrsboro International Plein Air Festival, which took place in June 2025 in Parrsboro, Nova Scotia, Canada. In 2024, she won the best of Newburgh prize in the Hudson Valley Plein Air Painting Festival.
I paint everything from tiny 4”x6” watercolor paintings to large 2’x3’ oil paintings, diptychs and triptychs.
I also paint commissions. For more information, click here.
