BoldBrush Recommends: Tracey Maras

Biography
Tracey Maras' foray into soft pastels derived from a long history of working as a hobbyist in pen & ink but with the desire to begin working in color. While working full-time as in healthcare, Maras carved out an hour or two each week to paint with a group of local pastellists and learning from introductory books on the subject. Eventually, she began attending workshops hosted by the Illinois Prairie Pastel Society.
With the transition to adjunct faculty at a community college, she was able to devote more time to pastels. This led to being juried into regional galleries, shows, solo shows, art fairs, publications, and taking on a leadership role as Exhibits Committee Chair of the Illinois Prairie Pastel Society.
In 2012 Maras began providing instruction on the pastel medium. She has provided classes and workshops through the Springfield Art Association, Illinois Artisans Program, Dick Blick Art Materials, Illinois Art League, Unison Colour Pastel Academy, Gallery 510, Perspectives Art Gallery, DuPage Art League, Illinois Raptor Center, Henson Robinson Zoo, and Tranquility Art Studio.
Each of Maras' paintings is approached from observation and research. She uses her own extensive library of reference photos, en plein air studies, and thumbnail sketches. With 11 years as a volunteer at a wildlife rescue facility and currently volunteering at a zoo, Maras frequently is offered behind-the-scene tours at wildlife sanctuaries, zoos, and aquariums, leading to opportunities rarely experienced by an artist.
Maras' approach to painting with pastels mirrors her approach to life. She is a life-long learner with an endless enthusiasm to learn, to improve, and to share with others.
