Biography
I paint for the same reason birds sing --
to express the joy of being alive!
“I didn’t start painting until I was 44. It began innocently enough when I had an empty picture frame and I decided to make something to fill it. The next thing I know, painting is an obsession and here I am.” - Trisha Adams
As a young person, I was drawn to Impressionist paintings. They delighted me. How did they evoke that reaction while other paintings “just sat on the wall?” I decided it was their understanding and revolutionary use of color. My early study focused on color. After that, I went down rabbit holes like, Why do some paintings demand our attention? What imbues the painting with energy and movement? What gives the painting a mood?
I noted parallels between painting and other forms of expression like singing and writing. Just as a writer chooses the details to include and the words which flavor the story, I edit (and often often exaggerate) what I find interesting so others can see it, too.
My work walks a line between representation and abstraction. Brushstrokes alone may be dots, dashes or rectangles, but when viewed further back, they coalesce into things, people and places. It feels like magic.
I enjoy plein air painting, particularly when traveling. I have painted and taught abroad in Provence, Tuscany, Umbria, San Miguel de Allende, Mexico and Australia.
Known for still life and landscapes, I am a member of the Washington Society of Landscape Painters, American Women Artists and American Impressionist Society. Paintings are in notable collections such as the Virginia State Senate, the Ritz-Carlton in Tysons, VA and in Nadine’s office on the set of Madame Secretary, to name a few.
