Biography
In a world where it seems anything can be considered art, I'm proud to be a representational painter.
What is representational painting, you ask? It's painting a story. Still life, landscape, or portrait - the goal is to create something that is powerfully evocative to bring the viewer joy, serenity or energy, and if we're lucky, awe. Representational painting is not copying, though the objects are clearly recognizable. It's an interpretation of what we see. It is accessible to everyone - no explanation is needed.
I paint from life, creating my own set ups in the studio. I love the tradition of old master painting and enjoy creating the mystery of an object coming out of the shadows into the light. I prefer oil paints for their luminosity and buttery consistency. My work is rich, classic and radiant and will bring joy, serenity and freshness to your home.
How did I get into this racket?
Allow me to start at the beginning. . .
I'm originally from Belgium (yes, I speak French) and now live in picturesque, leafy Ridgefield, Connecticut.
I've always loved to draw and paint, but unfortunately, was encouraged to be more practical. I went to Northwestern University for a B.S in Psychology. Not knowing what on earth to do with my degree, I became a writer, drifted into P.R. and ultimately ran my own public relations and marketing company. You can ask me anything about skincare, hair color and tech startups.
It's funny how your true self bangs on the walls, trying to get your attention. I developed crushing tension headaches, sometimes two or three times a week. I was so stressed out I didn't realize I wasn't fulfilled by my work. By chance, someone suggested a painting class to relax. The first time I climbed the old, rickety stairs at the Palette and Chisel Academy in Chicago, I was hooked. I loved re-learning how to mix paint and solve the visual problems in front of me. Wouldn't you know it, the headaches gradually diminished.
When I moved to NYC a few years later I was lucky to study with Gregg Kreutz at the Art Students League. I would have loved to take classes there uninterrupted, but making a living was important too. I longed for the day I could just paint full-time.
That day is here and I love every minute of it! I'm lucky to have a beautiful studio just steps away from my house, and mature plantings to incorporate into my still life setups. I'm inspired by so much. . . cool, atmospheric light cascading onto a shelf, the gesture of an impudent flower, or the glow created by a lemon or peach. Reflections in the water are pretty exciting, too.
I would say the overarching theme in my work is the sensuality and delicacy of nature.
I feel honored when someone buys a painting of mine. In fact, I remember every single collector and consider them a friend.

Even though I myself am an artist, I still collect other artists. The more naive the better. I also am constantly looking for Modern Art that expresses a new way artist contribute to the calendar time they work in. We are in the 21 century. Art during this time period has never existed. That really goes without saying. You most likely will not have a huge following but if you think that gift is speaking inside you after decades of realism and representational art then go for it. Hark this, there is your academic training involved. (Gallery owners don't like this. Their stable of clients want to recognize a brand and one brand only at 80 miles an hour as they highly desire their friends acceptance in collecting art.)
