Biography
I'm Wanda Ann, an encaustic mixed media artist living in the Great Smoky Mountains. Chances are if you don't find me in the studio, I am out seeking open spaces or quiet places with my camera and a journal sketchbook along with my constant companion, Ezekiel, a gentle giant Great Dane. Whether I'm in or out of the studio I'm questioning and diving into the mysteries of places found on the roads less traveled along with those that are so familiar they are often overlooked.
My original, unreproducible, and unique mixed media encaustic (beeswax) paintings are primarily nature-inspired, with a focus on plants and animals.
The natural subject matter is collected through experiences, photography, and sketches that are observed during my travels, mostly on foot.
In the studio, I reimagine my observations, sketches, and collections into digital composites creating paintings that dance a fine-tuned balance weaving between the digital world and traditional media.
My unique hand-painted artwork is created from layers of encaustic wax combined with my created compositions. Dry and oil pigments, along with other media are added to the layers of wax to cocoon, enhance, and transform the piece into one-of-a-kind pieces.
